A Scooby buddy of mine helped with my block measurements a few weeks ago, and noted the heft of the A-series casting. He said I should be able to cram a ton of boost into it. I had planned on no more than probably 15psi, but was wondering if maybe more boost is realistic on an A-series? I know that there are some silly pressures crammed into the old block, but I'm wondering about streetable, sustainable (i.e., no destroyed engine bits!) boost pressures...

I don't think you'll find the block as the weak link, what about the head gasket ? and the clutch and transmission ?

Although my engine is dyno'd at 21 psi i only run 14/15 on the track for sustained lengths of time, occasionally turning the boost up on the move to overtake.

The engine is only factionally faster at full boost over 15 or so as it bounes off the rev limit.

So twenty 21 as standard then more on a high boost setting.....gosh!

I have accidently on the rollers run 2 bar, it produced no more power though. Obviously with the compressed air way too hot and the turbo working so hard.

Stupid question...

Is that because the turbo isn't designed to produce more than 20psi or is that becuase the intercooler couldn't cool that volume of air effectively?

Would it be a different story if a charge cooler were fitted?

Something like that yes, A boggo t3 will not being efficient after a certain boost pressure. The same with any turbo realy.

Through tests of my own an MG metro T3 with a decent intercooler will be ok to 20 psi.

well when the switch is flicked to my higher boost level there is a noticable difference in performance, and I have no heat isues with my new set up.
I have yet to put it on the rollers and get it mapped, maybe in Jan.

16V project underway
