Sorry to post about my crappy spanish car on a mini forum, but the majority of people on other websites are bastards. You guys are all pretty helpful and have actually done stuff with spanners instead of just reading about it.

So... My other cv boot has split and needs to be replaced before the MOT. Do i need to remove the joint or can i stretch the boot over it? Any tips/advice anyone can provide would be very welcome.

Inner or outer?

Personally I don't like the stretch boots and prefer to use the proper ones, but thats just my point of view.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

agreed with tom use the original boot

welcome ric you will always get good straight advice here and no crap!*wink*

we may sway you to turbo your mini & never look back! .....eh!

its easy if its the inner one which usually never goes BUT.......

remove the large wheel bearing nut & then the track rod end & then the top & btm ball joint

now! you can change the outer one by....... removing the tyes on the gater by forcefully taping the CV joint to split it off the shaft

then replace the boot........

if its the inner one you can now replace this !

reassemble in the reverse order not forgetting the cable tyes on the boot, fill with new grease which is provided in the the kit fit new tyes & ....

finally torque the wheel bearing nut to 70 ft ib and re fit the split pin

good luck

YES the other websites are all Bull S**TE & Hen s**t!*laughing**laughing*

never done anything except type their fingers sore !*laughing**laughing*

anyone can talk a good fight.

I can't remember how the VAG shafts come to pieces.

From memory, I don't think you can get the outer cv off the shaft, so you have to remove the shaft from the car, remove the inner cv as well, do the outer boot first, then the inner.

Its easy enough though as the inner boot is held by a bolted flange, 6 off spline head bolts. Make sure you renew the lockwashers and torque these up again afterwards. Used to run a SEAT Ibiza rally car and we had big problems with these bolts coming adrift.

The bonus is that you don't have to drain the gearbox oil when you remove the shaft though.

buy a universal boot and a fitting cone from your local motor factors, will make your life so much easier. from car on the floor to back on the floor in about half hour.
