I'm toying with the idea of fitting 8x13 rather than 7x13s on the TT2. And I need to make a decision before deciding on what arches to fit.

My thoughts are that the 7x13 drive fine so what differance would the 8s make. For one the tyres would be streached more meaning that the tyre would have a lower profile.

Any thoughts convincing me either way would be appreciated.

Cheers

My thought would be it depends what you are going to do with the offset, if you go an inch wider, and all on the outside of the wheel, it may upset the balance of the car and make it a pig to drive. If you can get that extra width inset, then it may be worth trying.

That's an interesting thought. What is the typical offset of 8" wheels gennerallly supplied to fit Minis.

Is it just an inch wider or is it 1/2" either way.

I'd guess that it's just an inch wider though as the rears are pretty tight.

i had a set of 13x8 wellers a while ago with slicks on. From the mounting face they were 5" to the outer rim, and 4" to the outer rim on the inside. they fouled the inner arch pretty badly aswell.

i'd have thought 10's were the way to go. If i could afford the brake convo that's what i'd do.

I could be wrong (and very frequently am!!) but i thought the way to make a car handle well was to have as little unsprung weight as possible...

Lets not get into the whole 10s or 13s argument. We run 13s and are competitive with people running 10s. I would like to weigh a like for like wheel & tyre in 10s and 13s though to see the difference though, I suspect not much in it as there is more wheel in the 13, but less tyre.

Anyway, Wil, I think the 7s are fine for now. Lets not change too much at once. That is unless you have found some cheep comp turbos?

I've got a set of MB.s with Miglia rubber. They weight 6-7kgs. I've NEVER weighed a 13" como lighter than 13kgs...

That's ALOT, and easily justifies the 10" expense.

Fit Miglia wheels Ben :)

Yep reckon we could save 4kgs a corner (our wheels and tyres weigh 11kgs each).

But to change to 10" would cost around £1500 minimum including wheels and tyres and that's not including a spare set of wets. Even if I sold what wheels we had I'd barely make £500.

So it's no-go for 10s.

I prefer the look of 13s anyway.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

13x7 wil i can assure you 8s will foul the inner arch 7s and they still catch on the inner on full lock! just.

8s for straight line stuff.

I agree that 10s are always going to be lighter, but I would like to do a like for like test. Our wheels are heavy anyway, I just think that if you could get a miglia wheel in a 13 and put the same make and model tyre on the wheels what would be the differance?

I don't recon as much as you think.

Nope, not much understeer. It is very balanced. Liftoff oversteer is about right for me, other prople would like it a bit livelier.

Well our slicks are crossplys so in theory they have very stiff side walls but we only run them at 15psi. And they drive beautifully, really progressive on the limit.

I think we'll stick with the 7s then for now.

As for understeer, with the adjustable rear ARB we can get the car to do whatever we want. But we run it very neutral.

Ofcourse it will always understeer as you power out of the corners, but the LSD does a fantastic job of stiopping this.

We run a 4.1 diff BTW. 100mph flat out in 4th.
