has any one fitted an electric water pump ?
apparantly the are much more efficent especially at idling in traffic as they maintain a constant flow, plus the engine does not have to mechanically pump so theres an increase in bhp about 5 i think i read.
also you can leave the pump on when the engine is off to aid cooling, pretty cool if you race your turbo

oh i forgot to mention you can also get a controller for you electric pump , that will increase or decrese the pump speed depending on engine temp, and fits in the dash

I will be getting one... but not till I have a super engine to put it on...

In theory they are a great idea for turbo minis, all sorts of advantages :)

Is there any cheaper alternative pump? On one Miglia car I saw a different, much smaller inline pump. Any ideas?

I had a renault clio 16v ,and there was an electric water pump on it .

I've used one on my Mini for a couple of years now, also using the electronic control box to regulate pump speed. Seems to work well.

Not to sure how much is needed to cool a mini..

Nothing on the market uses an eectric water pump (yet) they are just not durable enough...

A mini racer doesnt need much by way of cooling flow... in compairison to a std road car.

Clio and R19 16v and all V6 Vauxhalls use the pump as a 'run on' after the engine is swithched off.

These aren't really up to the demands of cooling an entire engine, but the ones like the miglia boys use clearly are (not neccesarilly the davies craig pump)

don't know the flow of the unit used on renaults but I think that a "run on " after engine switch of, can be a very good thing on a mini turbo as a lot of heat still need to be dissiped ( the turbo bearings will like a lot .
what pump miglia boys are running, very interested as it could help me in an other project.

What a std pumnp shifts is one of the tests I am going to be doing over the summer...

No one has a clue how much or how little the std pump moves... without that you can't even being to guess if its needs more or even less to improve cooling!!!!

Plans for the summer are a complete thermal investigation into the turbo engine, both oil and coolant. What I have planned is probably more reserach than BL put into it in the 1st place LOL.. well possibly anyway!

just a thought to people putting electric pumps on road cars is it worth the hassle i was just thinking about the alternator drive belt cooling fan etc

saying that i suppose one way around it would be just to remove the fins on the pump impeller

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

shorter belt and no pump....

At ford I did a load of research into elec pumps... the reason ford wont is that at the moment they are not durable enough. You can't fit a pump to a mondeo you know wont last more than 60k miles. Drivers just don't understand dash lights telling them to stop RIGHT NOW! So ford won't risk the warranty/hassel.

After the Goodwood track day I managed just 3 laps per session before it got to 90 degrees. 11 laps all day. Still a good laugh though as first time playing on slicks.

Thanks to the help and suggestions I got during the day. It's a lot better, but blatting round a track still makes it get a tad warm.

I was thinking of fitting a metal heater matrix in the front after talking to Stu Wright's Dad Colin, but want to keep things inside the car. I just want to avoid bits hanging out the engine bay and extra holes everywhere (kinda gives the game away) and keep things neat. I've just got a 2 core rad and small oil cooler. The cabin heater has long gone.

Any suggestions?

I was chatting to Mike Barratt about these. he said the pumps are really good but the controllers seem to have faults, or atleast the ones he had seen seem to. He does see a lot of cars. He said just have it come on with your ignition so thats what im doing.

I have noticed that they have brought out a new controller though so maybe its much better.

Ive been looking at fitting a mk3 astra rad at the front. they're very thin and seem a good size too.

iain is your frog a clubby? can't remember...

but anyway if so, a mk2 metro radiator will fit into the front of a clubby an absolute treat. All you have to do is trim back the panel behind the base of the grille and the rad drops in nicely, also leaves room for an oil cooler lower down behind the three holes in the front panel. I used this setup on my old clubman estate with the thermostatic controlled electric cooling fan and it was top notch.
