I`ve often wondered about this...

What i will assume, is that the `head` casting moulds were modified to suit the slightly different MPi heads, and most likely the block moulds were destroyed, or butchered to suit the MPi...
It`d be nice to think that they`re sat waiting to be discovered in a foundry somewhere though!!!

Who knows where the moulds went. Probably destroyed. There would be no way anyone will re-do the blocks!! Most people think engines are to expensive as it is. God knows how much a new block would cost.
On another casting issue......If we were to get the turbo inlet manifold and plenum remade, what would you change?

On the inlet, Id immediately get rid of the bottom of the runners that are infact lower than the head inlet. I think Ive got a brilliant drawing of this somewhere :)

would be facinating to find out where the castings went, particularly for the head. I have to agree on the block front, the amount of machining is imense although the thought of them getting rare or even the posability of casting it in ally :o

Personally the gearbox casting sounds the most interesting, since its been the weak point i'd love to redesign it. Infact thats something im working on at the mo.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

The Aluminium Alloy A-series block has already been tried. Of course it didnt't work with three bearings etc..

I would change nothing on the inlet manifold - except for losing the water-cooling part - as Vegard described.
The plenum has a lot of scope - but mainly, change it completely - have the intake on the same side as the master cylinders.
A DV take-off is a given aswell.

Davem the inlet on the plenum IS on the same side as the master cylinders.

You do not agree with me on filling up the bottom of the inlet? I almost had this welded up last time it was off... This time it will ..

I'd be leaving the internal shape exactly as it is. My opinion only.

making a new plenum is not difficult... it certainly doesn't need to be a cast one!

If you take a design to someone good with a welder it shouldn't take them too much time!

I'd agree with Dave on the shape of the inlet runners.

I have a few theories of my own on why the shape you mention is there, but not wanting to sound a cunt if my thoughts are wrong I am going to keep my gob shut for now.

No, please share.. The present shape might mean that the main inlet charge flow is situated in the middle of the head's port. Changing it to "my spec" will make the inlet charge run in the bottom of the head port... At least for the first few Cms... What do we prefer?

I know that at Aston Martin the jigs to make DB5,6 and some of the V8 jigs were used as hardcore under the foundations of the new crash repair shop. It could be that A series moulds suffered a similar fate somewhere.
Paul

I seriously doubt it!
