Ive got this back plate made in carbon, just got to work out a really good way of threading it for chain cover bolts.
Any ideas?

I seriously doubt it!

I hope you got it cured at a higher temperature than it's going to see during running?

The resin used has to be cured above the final operating temperature or it goes soft and you'll end up with a flexi cam chain back plate.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

daves suggestion of rivinuts is all i can think of aswell, but you might have to 'sink' them in for a flush surface, and if its the same thickness as the std part, i can see this weakening it a fair bit.

How about using captive nuts, these are riveted onto the plate. I'm no big fan of rivnuts as ive had so many slip when trying to undue them.

How about making a plate out of steel, to the same thickess and dimensions as the original, and covering it in 'stick on' carbon fibre look plastic sheet?

Bling Capital!

Pre preg Carl. Its top notch and made by a formula 1 team by a mate who works there. It was baked at a very high temperature. It only weighs 60 odd grammes
Paul

I seriously doubt it!

ok ,then itds up to the job, but you still have to get some kind of arrested females on there, you' are going to struggle for space at the back, up against the block. whatever you use its going to have to stick on the back somhow as you probably already know .
surly you'd be better off getting some high quality alloy ones done and having carbon covers made.

Yeah, surely saving 60g is just a matter of going and having a pretty decent turd before racing?

I do agree, but I must admit I hate the above statement. Of course you turd before racing, this is in addition :)

Whenever reliability or saftey is compromised by attempting to achieve lightweight, then you're playing a danerous game.

There must b pleny of other places (eg - an 'off the shelf' titanium subframe, titanium top, bottom arms and tie-bars, etc where gains can be recieved better.
I'd just be making it out of alloy personally.

No Tom, you got that muddled, carbon only weighs 60 grammes, steel weighs 1 1/2 kilos

Hell, I reckon I could shit a kilo and a half if I REALLY tried....LOL....

Does the steel backplate really weigh 1.5 Kg? I have never even entertained weighing it, but that does suprise me! Although my car is a fat bastard.........

some of my more pointless excercises include attacking my pedal box with the drill to save 200g

however a little + little + little + little = a lot

Exactly Nic, ive done the same and it occurs to me that every component is slightly stronger or bigger than neccessary. I have spent the last 4 years detailing every component on my car this equaits to hundreds of tiny jobs to get the overall weight down to 493 kilos.
