Hi, does anyone know the difference between a wastegate and a normal dumpvalve? I bought my engine and it came with bailey dv but dont know what it sounds like? Can it be adjusted to make different noises? How does a wastegate work as opposed to a dump valve?

Thanks in advance*happy*

A wastegate has nothing to do with a dumpvalve mate.

The wastegate controls the turbo pressure by directing exhaust gasses away from the turbine once the turbo has reached its max boost as determined by the wastegate acuator.

The dumpvalve releases some compressed air from the compressor side of the turbo when the throttle butterfly is closed. This is with the idea to keep the gasses flowing and prevent turbine stall. I dont really think that happens on our relativly small CC engines so really a dumpvalve just wastes compressed air...

But another person i know with a rs turbo makes a noise like this on gear up:

(sorry for the language in the second video chavs will be chavs as it where)

Are these different types of vlaves or can dv's be adjusted to make different noises? Sorry for all the questions chaps, cheers again*happy*

ok to try and help out a little.
the first vid i am sure it is one of these as its a dual stage thing for verry high boost, but also works quick enough when not using a lot of boost and WONT leak.

the second two, is what you get if you have no d/v of any type, i am unclear as to why they make the sound but...they do but [people seem to regard it as wastegate noise...and that causes confusion between peple as seen above.

you dont need anything more than a bailey valve on a mini really your not goign to run mre boost than that can release and it does sound good. forge make a different sound but do the same job, they make a lower noise, sounds like opening a bottle of coke.

The first vid I'd rather have the V8 that rumbles past when he does the U turn, the second vid makes me glad I don't drive and escort or anything remotely similar and the third vid the guy might find it will go faster if he adds maybe one more gauge to the 3 and a half million he already has!

The sound from vid no:2 is like pot_dan says it´s when you don´t use a dv the car make that sound. The sound is from when the pressure in the plenum has no way to go and force the turbin to stop rapidly, not very god for the turbo though.

Ah ok cheers for the info again! Just wondered thou, if that noise from vid to is a car without a DV, then how come normal turbo'd cars dont make that noise?

Every modern "normal" turbo car today has a dv fitted. But it´s a recirculating dv and it makes no sound because the pressure goes back into the system. The dv's you are talking about is the open type that releses the overpressure out in to the atmhosphere and makes a "turbo" sound.

yeah i noticed that when we tried no d/v on a mates punto gt the sound came from the intercooler so maybee the sound is jut made from the air compressing or something? pls someone shed some light.!
