Hey all,

Liking the new site, well posh.

Got a free 1300 engine, from the engine number think its a S engine. I am thinking of overhauling and tuning it, keeping it N/A to fit into my marcos.

I think the engine is fitted with a remote gearbox, what are the differences between the rod and remote gearboxes both visibly and strength, i belive the later rod boxes are better is this true, if my 1300 engine is fitted with a remote box could i swap to a rod change box if they are better and would it just be a case of bolting on a rod change box to the engine.

Any help would be of great help many thanks

If the gearbox is 4sync, there is NO difference between that and a rod box. I like Remote boxes, but there are fewer parts that wear in the linkage system on the rod ones. Strengthwise, they're all the same! ( Apart from 3 sync which are inferior)

the rods are longer than the remote, but the remote is a better box if you are rallying / rally x as the linkages are inside the armoured cast remote *wink* i have seen many cars rolling off the track with snapped linkages. i personally thought the remote box was a stronger box but have no evidence to substantiate this, other than 5 seasons rally x nothing technical though

All gears inside bar the reverse idler are the same, so they EXACTLY the same :)

vegard not sure if you are replying to my comment, but if you are i was refering to the rod change as aposed to the remote change, if you measure them off the box the remote changer is slightly shorter than the rod changer

someone posted a very good point about the remote box in that its basically the ultimate ultimate engine steady. However, i can see that a car with shot engine mounts would probably duff the diff cover and changer, probably why there are so many of those gearboxes with cracks in them

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

I was thinking about the internal gears. The linkage rod(s) might be longer, you tell me :)

Yes, the remote acts as a giant engine steady...Good idea isn't it...

lol i am clear on what ya mean now vegard... i can confirm through using both that the linkages are different lengths the remote type being slightly shorter.

Cheers for that clears up a little bit i think, was thinking about having the gear linkage within the car (like most severns and miglias) as i under stand it speeds up gear changes, is this true?? also if i was to do this would i need a rod change box apposed to my remote change box.

Any ideas.

It does not at all increase the speed of shifting, but it allows you to cut the lever, move the lever to wherever you want it to be, and increase room for exhaust etc.

Yes, you'll need a rod-box for this.
