Hi there, it sounds a lot like your ignition timing is incorrect. If you still have points and condenser (im sure some MGs did) check gap. Check rotor arm and dizzy cap for cracks. Check to see if dizzy is loose in which case it could have moved. Make sure coil is working well and that low tension wires are not damaged or corroded on the terminals of coil. It certainly sounds more like electrical than fuel because of the carb popping / back firing.

Ive had fun with the amplifier modules on the side of the dizzy causing funny running problems. May be worth trying another of these if you have or can borrow one. |

The yellowy stuff is emulsified oil/water. It can be a problem in many cars at this time of year, especially if you do not do many long journeys, as the engine oil does not get hot enough to evaporate any water (from condensation).

Thankyou for the replys! Yeah ive been talking to my dad and he seems to thing that the gunge is due to the condensation as the car has been off the road for a few weeks so may be pushing the crap out.

You get backfires through the carb usually when the ignition timing is incorrect. If the ign is retarded the plug sparks too early which ignites the fuel/air mixture while the inlet valve is still open sending a backfire through the carb. If the ign is advanced you get backfires through exhaust. Or it could be something like a burnt out or bent or sticking valve. Check your valve clearances.
I seriously doubt it! |

If electrics arn't spot on,i.e. dodgy lead the spark can get delayed,so sparking whilts the inlet valve is still open

car dieing after a long sustained run will be the carb icing up, happens a lot if K&N type filters are used. Could also explain the other problems aswell. I've seen the future and tbh its Pie
