OK im gonna get a digital camera so i can post pictures. I am not electronically minded unless its 12 volt car electrics, so what the hell do I go for besides a pretty colour? and does the kit come with it to put the pictures onto PC?
Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I've had a Canon A70 for three years. It's just started playing up - but i'd buy another Canon - and i will.
I've dropped mine nearly a half-dozen times from waist/chest height onto concrete/tiled floors, and only after dropping it from my ceiling onto some planks a few weeks ago (10ft drop) has it started playing up.

If you want a camera to use/abuse then the A70/A80 is the one to buy IMO.

Whatever you decide on, Minium to purchase is 3MegaPixels, and a 3x optical Zoom. Don't even bother with digital zoom specs, I never use digi zoom - ever.

A Macro zoom is also usefull - basically you could take a picture of a 1/4" UNF nut and it'd be larger than the screen on your computer - in crystal clear detail.

Most camera's come with 'video' capability, so you can take vids. Only complaint with the A70 is you can't zoom whilst videoing.

You do need to get a card reader to make life easy - basically you slide the memory stick out of the camera, insert it into the card reader, plug the card reader into your PC USB port, and it's just like you're looking at a folder on your computer. You can resize, delete, whatever to the pics.

You also need to purchase a high-capacity memory card. Go straight to a 512Mb. Ebay is your best bet for a card reader and memory - shop around for the best deals. Sandisk Ultra is one of the fastest memory cards and is worth it over much cheaper ones IMO.

I was in the same boat as you three years ago - and advised by many to get a Canon. I haven't regretted it.

Somewhere around Swindon

i have a canon D2 and lumix fz20

the canon i used for A level photography and is a superb bit of kit but at £900 a bit pricey for general stuff

the panasonic Lumix FZ series i cant recommend enough the stabilization is superb and the camera in general is very very easy to use, its ideal for high quality pics on a reasionable budget, it has a long analogue zoom lens (more important than a digital zoom)

I got a Samsung digimax v800 for xmas. Takes some really good clear photos and has 8.1 megapixel 3x optical zoom and i understand it was very reasonably priced! At 8.1 megapixels i get 9 photos on super high quality though!

A bit of an aside, but the majority of pictures I post on this forum are taken using my phone. It has a 2 mega pixel camera built in, which is more than good enough for taking snaps of engines or cars.

If you are like me and are not bothered about serious photography, a cheapish new phone may be a good solution for just being able to put snaps on here.....

This pic below was taken with my phone to give an example of the reasonable quality.....

you can pick up a 2.1mp camera for next to nothing these days, that way you dont have to worry about dropping it/smashing it. imho.

i bought my brother a cheapie camera from tescos, £35. Doubt it'd last long and the pic colour is a bit off (can correct this if you ever get them printed properly). 3mp u cant complain and when he drops it or looses it on a nightout or whatever then who cares. If thats what u want anyway.

Personally i have an olympus c-300, its a bit old now, but works perfic and the picture quality is really really spot on. I know u can do better nowerdays, but i'd certainly get another olympus after this.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie
