hi,
Just been given a 1380 engine with a burnt out valve and in need of some new piston ring along with this i was given a t3 metro turbo and mainfold not off the same car. the engine came complete wit a straight cut gearbox and the cylinder head is a m.e.d full race item running 31.5mm and 37mm valves the pistons are an omega item unsure what though!(huge dish in them). As i have to rebuild to do the rings how do i work out the compression ratio? I would like to fit the turbo to the engine running low levels of boost so its sorta reliable. Is there a low compressin +60 piston avalible? And will a std metro turbo dizzy be fine for the engine? Am interested in water injetion system for the engine do these have any avantaches? Any help would be great

Hello and welcome!

Given... you lucky ... *tongue*

There are one or two 1380 turbo on this board, so it can defiantly b done. Jukka is probably the person to speak to, as he has most experience of them!

Working out the CR is easy... you calculate the swept area, ie the volume of air the piston moves and then work out the volume that its moved into... head chamber volume, gasket volume, ring land volume and deck height volume.

BTW your pistons are probably 73.5mm not +60 thou.

Any modified engine will benifit from a distributer specificaly setup for that engine. So a metro one will be a good start, but could definaty be improved on :)

Water injection is a big subject and I don't think anyone on this site is running it... It depends if you really need it... most minis are happy with about 150bhp and you just don't need WI at that level of boost.

Lots have tried water injection... As Alex says - no-one uses it currently tho - make of that what you want!

Omex offer a full injection kit for that which is shite. Stick to a carb, and just use the ECU for the sparks.

ECU's can be had for around ?450-?500 for a sparks only unit. Budget on ?300 for wiring and sensors, then add a whole load of time in for fitting and mounting the sensors. And then you need to get it tuned at a GOOD Rolling road - you'll notice i keep stressing this point.... *laughing*

It costs an awfull lot of money... But then again, the internals of my engine are nothing special, yet the 1/4 mile times speak for themselves - so if you had ?2k to build a complete engine with, i'd go for basic (but well chosen!*laughing**laughing**laughing*) internals, and a mapped ignition...

Just as a point of interest I have just sorted a fully mapable ignition system for about ?100. It is currently working on the bench and I should be fitting it to my 998 normally asperated as a test before I fit it to my 998 turbo.

Basically the ECU is a DIY job called MegaSquirt and the bit that fire the plugs is a ford unit called an Edis4. check out http://www.megasquirt2.com/index.htm for lots more info on it.

I will let you know how it works out on the car, but I don't expect to many problems and for the money compared to other systems its a bargin. Also if I fancy injection at some point that can easially be added.
