depends what you are using it for !

You going to start the engine with it ? Or you gonna use a slave for starting ?

I presume your talking about the red top batterys or similar. These can be a bit touchy at times and are expensive

I run an 18Ah (redtop type) battery. I have no alternator and have a starter battery.

I previously had a 10Ah motorbike battey, but it just wasn't big enough.

Great question. I'm looking for the smallest and lightest possible battery for my N/A raceMini. How few amps can you get away with?

I to have succesfully ran my car on a 18ah wheelchair battery, i do use a boost starter with it and never the lights and wipers etc..

I use a red top 40 on the road, they are great but 11KG, unlike 6 like the 18AH.

do a search on Ebay for battery golf. loads of 18/20ah batteries pop up, some are gel to.

I ran my Metro at Oulton, powering 3 fuel pumps, ignition and brakes lights all day on an 18AH gel golf cart battery.

Well I measured the current to run my car. Just to run the ignition and fuelpump and the revcounter (with a light on!) it takes 4Amps.

So without an alternator you're in theory looking at 4 hours running. But this will be massively reduced if you are using the battery to start the engine.

My battery easily lasts one event (probably 1/2 to 1 hours running) including starting a couple of times. It weights about 5kgs.

The 10Ah battery struggled to last one event and was only 1kg lighter.

What do the regs say for road legal regarding batteries for drag days ???

May have a few ideas for a mega light battery. May be able to do it for say 0.6kg or less.

Also remember than when you discharge a battery at above there stated capacity test current (think this is based on 10 hour discharge for lead acid type cells) you use more of the batteries pwer just to get the power out. In high discharge application this can end up giving you maybe just 50% of the batteries capacity.

If i was generally using a starter battery then id go for red top 12/15 size. These still have 370 amp cranking power ! amazing for the size.

Only if you run it to totally flat...just keep them charged up fully when not in use, mine are ten years old now.

Ive been using a Red Top 15 for road and race for 2 years- no probs. I do keep it topped up with a conditioning charger when not in use and I also disconnect it.

I seriously doubt it!

Yes its vital to keep these babies topped up. If they are going to stand for a while the best chargers are the little multistage models from DMS and others. These charge at around a couple of amps and then go into constant voltage mode where they just keep the battery fully topped up and ready for use.

Red tops are heavy as they are stil contain a lot of lead like any other lead acid battery. these are not dry or gell cells they are AGM batteries.

I use a Red Top 15 with a race alternator. Its fine if you use minimum electric, no good if you've want to play some megga sound sytem with the wipers and heater on.

Mines got a red top 25. I use my mini on the road at the moment, and it seems fine, load of starting power, and driving with the lights on and wipers going etc is all OK. I just use it as normal, no charging etc. Put, I have no tunes in my car. I dont think it be any good if you had a 'phat' sound system*tongue*

Weighs 6kg.

Its only a bit of metal. If it blows it blows!
