I think weight removal is the key. Just remove all the unnecessary stuff you don't use. Apart from that, make sure the cam is dialed in properly a good service and getting the mixture setup perfectly all help.

The best thing i found for gaining the optimum performance from my 998 was.......putting a brick on the accelerator!!!!

sorry misread ur post, the first thing would be a stage one kit, around £150.

For a 998 get the kit with the cooper freeflow manifold. Then after you have had it fitted a bit of time on a rolling road will have it setup perfectly and most places quote a 20% increase in performance. The insurance company i was with at the time only charged me a extra £60 for having it.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

i coulodnt get any mods insured on my 998 when i was 17 without a £1000 increase, even wheels

however i ended up doing it and not telling them (ahem)

when i had 1 yrs no claims i was able to get it for £600 on a modded 998

so you can fit the stage one and tell the insurance company

fit the stage one and be naughty

fine tune the std set up, and removed all unnecersary weight, sound proofing and crap to make it lighter

however remember that everyone crashes their first mini

I managed not to do this, my first mini served me well for 2 years and then rotted in peace just a bit too much for me to repair with my limited skills at the time.

It was the second one I crashed. Three times in fact. I got quite good at pulling the inner wings straight by chaining it to a tree and driving it backwards, and then welding new fronts on it and respraying it.

i never smashed any of me minis but killed a few other cars some purposely...i would leave ya mini stock until you get some no claims mate. for these reasons
1) cheaper insurance
2) less power for an inexperienced driver = safer for other road users
3) upgrading ya motor then not telling the insurance will end in mega tears.....you might be in a crash, perhaps not your fault. insurance man checks ya car and sees it 8nt what you said it was.... bingo you got no insurance and could be liable to arrest for obtaining a percuniary advantage not good. big fine and expensive insurance for 5 years minimum..
get a quote with adrian flux insurance, get it with and without the mods, they specialise in minis......also worth telling you that if you under quote the price of your car to the ins peeps and you do get in a smash they wont pay out !

cheers

Richie...........yet another short post by me ! captn rambles on

I dont want you lads to hate me but I think I should tell you that I did stock car racing for 3 years in the early eghties and killed at least 50 minis. It was great crashing for a laugh (with a roll cage)
I took the cars to the meetings in the back of VW van and the mini was the only proper car that fitted in and was freely available (most were free)
I didnt need insurance just crashed and got an outher.
Where have all the minis gone*wink*
