My budget is running low and my main priority at the moment is getting the car sprayed. Now I'm still a couple of parts short of being ready to fit the turbo but I will be removing the engine prior to getting the car painted in order to spray the engine bay and to clean up the engine. What I was wondering was - I have both the inlet and exhaust manifolds ready for the turbo conversion, as the engine is going to be out anyway and I need to replace the whole exhaust (accident with a ramp at the mechanics :p ), can I replace the standard manifolds and fit my metro turbo inlet and exhaust ones while still keeping the rest of the engine engine as is for now or will this bugger everything up?

btw, I am by no means giving up on the turbo conversion! I have all the main components except for a fuel tank, the ECU and a load of pipes and hoses. However the single most expensive thing left to do on my list is to get the car painted so I'm going to get that over and done before I spendd any more money.

sorry, I just re read that and it makes more sense in my head :p

What I was asking is what min1071s understood : can I run the engine withour a turbo on the turbo manifolds? but as mini1071s said I guess not :p

Cheers Peter.......

snowfruit; it is quite possible (in fact easier really) to bolt the manifolds on once the engine is in the car anyway. But whilst your engine is out, take the opportunity to fit your bulkhead box (if you are having one?) as this definately is FAR easier with the engine out.

Just a quick one - You dont need the ecu mate - Do a search on the website to find out why :)

thanks for that Tom.

SumpNut I assume you mean I could use a turbo dizzy. But I'd rather go the whole hog and get the ECU

KISS

Keep It Simple Stupid

Aside from the management speak jargon, to start out with, don't overcomplicate matters. With a newly built engine, or newly installed carb and fuel system, or whatever, don't overcomplicate things. The turbo dizzy, or any damn dizzy will do just fine to get the engine physically started for the first time. The ECU for megajolt or whatever can be added at a later date, even if that is only the next day. If the engine won't fire up, its a lot easier to swing the dizzy about to see whether it is your ignition stopping it from firing up, or something else.
My engine will at some point hopefully run over 1 bar of boost and mapped ignition. At the moment it runs a std dizzy and no boost at all......

If you are using megajolt, the motor should start up regardless of settings as the EDIS controller defaults to 10 degrees advance in limp home mode without the ECU attatched. Something would have to be horribly wrong for it not to work, as long as it has power, verified by a multimeter or just a bulb and crocodile clip, it will start the engine. I started mine up without the jolt ecu attatched, no map sensor etc.

If you had gone for a total rebuild, then I would totally agree with Tom, ( I don't think it has been touched), worked before the rebuild of the car so providing all the parts go back on as before, I can't see a problem. If it has been rebuilt then Tom's advice is 110% though! Good luck!
