What is MegaJolt?

MegaJolt Lite JR (MJLJ for short) is a simple programmable ignition control ECU. It is based on Ford’s EDIS system but gives you the ability to vary your ignition timing according to both engine load and rpm. A distributor only varies the ignition timing according to engine speed, and as such is always compromised.

Benefits include:

Improved throttle response
Far superior reliability (no more wet weather problems)
Stronger Spark
Less “cammyness”

How do I get one?

MJLJ can be ordered as either a kit of parts for you to solder together, or as a pre built unit. MJLJ is an open source project with many different people working on many different projects. As such, new software and maps are being created all the time.

What other parts do I need?

Other than the ECU itself you need a Crank Position Sensor, an EDIS module, a coil pack and a trigger wheel.

The 1st three parts can either be brought direct from AFRacing new or found in your local scrap yard on a number of Fords.

What about wiring it up?

As all installations are different, as yet there is not a standard wiring harness. The connectors are supplied for you to build your own, as it’s a fairly simple due to the low number of wires needed.

Can I use this on a SPi or MPi Mini?

Theoretically yes, it would function to control the ignition timing but as it does not control the fuelling a future development called MegaSquirt would probably suit your application better.

Good post Alex. Most of that really needs to be in the 'tech' section. That is the first time I've seen it explained properly.

I can supply a starter map, but to get the most from the system you need to tune it to suit your engine - that's the wonderful part of the system.

All you need is an old PC with a serial port and you connect the MJLJ ECU to the PC and you can upload a new map to it.

The software is easy to use and looks like...

You type into the boxes the at the top what RPM values you want and the ones to the left the MAP (pressure) values your engine will use.

From here you edit the numbers in the centre and set them to the number of degrees of ignition advance you desire.

On another page you can set the user definable outputs....

These could be rev limiters, over boost warning lights, NOS activation or anything else you want switched on when the engine experiences either a certain RPM or MAP (pressure) is reached.

somewhere around the 200 quid mark...

You don't need anything to do that crude vac advance!

You simply map in more advance at light engine load (ie low map sensor readings).

On a similar note, as you build boost you can also reduce the ign advance providing a boost retard effect!!!

Its a turbo map but DO NOT use it!

It just a linked picture from the MJ website...

There is an example map on here.. I think Wil/Ben's.

Hi Dan,

I'm now offering these kits on a constant basis... so as and when you want one let me know.

Sold 5 kits and 4 assembled ECUs so far :)

You need a fiesta with a coil pack... so around m-reg I'd guess. An F-reg is probably too early!

Just look for one of there:

and then make sure you get the following:

EDIS module and wiring (6" would do it)
Coil pack and again the wiring
Crank Position Sensor and of course the wiring!
