that looks familiar....i had that problem by not using center main strap and arp rod bolts, it was on a N/A engine, but due to power and lots of revs the crank flexes and blows ya shells to bits, if you r unlucky er you throw end caps off rods too ! was it from pot 2 or 3 by chance ?

Don't know. But all that scoring and crap inside the pump is suggesting this engine hasn't been running very cleanly for a start. On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:

Hi, its from rod number 4. The engine was VERY clean when assembled, the galleries where opened&cleaned and everything.the pump has gotten some punishment because of the bits from the bearing I think. Edited by miniminor63 on 12th Jan, 2006. |

I'd agree, the cause of the bearing material breaking away from the underlay like that has got to be debris has got round there?

i didnt think the oil pump was too bad concidering the big end is such a mess. Was the crank ground before use? have you checked the journal for taper? Looks very much like oil starvation.

I don't agree on this being il starvation. It should have been blue of some sort then. I've got my mind set on bearing breaking up because something is wrong with it....I really cannot see this being oil starvateion. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

The bearing with all the material coming off is that the TOP or BOTTOM bearing ? i would guess at it being the BOTTOM if its a high revving N/A engine as i see this with my 1450 revving it to 7500rpm.. but never that bad.

olil pressure never below 40 at idle with hot oil. A bit on the high side maybe at full revs. Crank and block cleaned and checked. It was not started without oil pressure. And yes it is a high revving N/A engine. |

I'm running around 70psi HOT at 6000rpm and around 50psi at idle and have been since 1989 on the same engine so High oil pressure doesnt hurt a thing if you have the HP to spare.
