hello,

I am in two minds about my next gearbox, it will be a SC/long ratio type of this as a turbo really needs to be pushing against a little bit of force compared to just easy reving. i will also be going the sc drops and even the minispares evo lsd

but the delema is to go rod change or remote change

i think they both have pro's and con's, here in Australia rod and remote are easliy available as all mini's up to 71 to 72 had a remote and then 72 to 79 all had a rod change but not many A+ as we only got very limited A+ here in the last of the mokes till 81 or so. then no more mini's at all*frown*

i have always had a remote box in mine n/a and turbo motors and with the KAD shifter its great and even without its nice throw. the bad is that to get many good bits from UK most items are for rod boxes and A+ one mainly too and that the gear shifter also takes up so much room under the car so your zorst hangs low etc etc

for the rod the shifter can me made to go inside the car and make great room for the zorst but every rod change i have felt /driven feel total crap very sloppy long throw but i must admit my g/b's have been built by me with most new bits and new bushes in the selector area etc and all the rod changes have been old and worn.

so this leads me to my question can you get without the short shifter(kad or the like) the feel of the remote box in a rod box? i do not want to rebuilt a box and spend mega $$ on it to find out that it has a crappy sloppy long throw feel.

also does any body else use a long ratio type setup?

your thoughts please

thanks

I'd say that a decent rod-box will NOT be more sloppy than a remote one. The remote ones have got so many shafts and bushes that wear which are NLA now. It's easier to rebuild a rod box as well.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

red my advice would be stick with the rod change as there are more parts available cheaper for this in the uk

inorder for you to get the real none sloppy feel get a minisport quick shift these are fabola! & cheap!

the feel of the gear shift is shorter than most modern cars with this fitted, honest!

the gearbox ratio well, *smiley*

as you commented the turbo needs more gearing well, go for the clubman gearset from minispares the ratios are more or less the same as the metro challange boxes, just a tad higher!

this togeather with a 2.9 or 2.7 final drive for those long ausie roads will be just GREAT!*happy*

Trust Me!
*wink*

Just to add. The Clubman gearkit with a 2,7 FD. How on earth would you get rolling with a bit of lag??

I've driven Ben's car, clubman gearkit, 2.9:1 diff, 13" wheels. It pulls away fine, OK, for race or drag use it is too long for an optimal quick start, but for the road it makes for a good relaxed combination with the torque of the turbo.
