One thing i thought of using but have never got round to looking at is the "ball and socket" type impact UJ's.

I dont know if they'll be a good fit or not because havent played with one but thought they'd be up to the task.

All depends on the fit though, anyone got one or access to a good one?

i know people always say that these things are bloody expensive, and i have heard of people trying to use socket ujs before (not impact ones mind) and these failing really quickly....

however, i do have one idea that might just work.... a lot (read most) of cars ahve at least one uj if not two in the steering coloumn, and i dont see any reason why these couldnt be used....... they bloody well ought to be more that up to the job, alhtough they may be a little larger than ideal....

Carl i've used these at work and they seem robust enough for motor shafts.

Check under Sales Contacts as theres a place in the midlands that sell them.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

Not a bad idea pete on the steering u/j's, the only thing that comes to mind is that you would have to see if they are capable of taking axial pull/push loads? As in a steering application, they are supported, and only transmit a radial load.
Just a thought.

The easiest source of cheap UJ's (for steering and gear linkages) is a Mk4/5 Escort. They are plentiful in scrapyards and have two in the steering column. Should cost you about a fiver.

fair point there tom.... not something i'd overly considered..... could well end up with the same problem as socket ujs then... plenty strong enough round and round, but as soon as you start to apply axial loads, kinda shit themselves and fall apart.....

anyone actually tried it and found it to work?

I got some from R.S. Components. They're about £17 each and come with gaitors. Also come as a blank so you have to drill the holes in the end to suit the diameter rod you're using. Go to rs.com, check under the yellow section, then mechanical components, then universal joints.
