Hi all,

Went into my local paint suppliers today to get a price for some cellulose paint to respray my mini, The woman behind the counter said that if i want cellulose then i ought to stock up as in 3 months time cellulose won't be available anymore as it is being replaced by waterbased paints!

Has anyone else heard about this? Apparently its been a rumour for a few years but this year it is definatly being fazed out!

Thought i'd share this with you,

Thanks Matt

Ahh i see, yer she said that many of her customers are thinking about going out of buisiness because apparently it needs an oven and will take twice as long to apply. Not sure exactly when cellulose stops being available but apparently they are the only place in the portsmouth area that still stock cellulose.

ok, from what ive heard from my local place, waterbased paints do not require a oven to be used at all, and they are infact far superior to celly and two pack...... the colour match and coverage between existing and new paint, is said to be excelent, at least as good, if not better than repairing with current paint technologhy......

bear in mind that all paints (two pack and celly) will still be available without any problems from the rest of the eu, so my guess is that nearer the time, you will find a few enterprising people in europe will start doing mail order paint to the uk......

afik a lo o pple a already using water based paint, so i find that hard to believe.... that said, bird shit is acididc iirc, and will trash celly for sure, so might well damage waterbased paint..... it is possible that all water based paints will have to be laqured, im not sure, it was a few months ago i was speaking with the supplier.........

hmm.. my car generaly gets a"freshen up" with celly every year, as the winter salts and occational spill of petrol from the petrol cap properly buggers up the finish :( what is "1k" then? i have used that for my roof, but of a PITA to work with and coverage was shite.

The whole idea is (as I understand) to reduce solvent usage.

However, just like when Lead was banned in fuel, plenty of other horrible substances were introduced to compensate.

I'm sure the same will happen with paint. Old water-based paints might have been poor compared to celly ones, but there was no encouragenment to make them better, now there is.

I have to agree with Wil there. A chum of mine was moaning that he was now being forced to use lead free solder in work now. I have been using lead free solder for ages and its fine. People, unfortunately, fear/oppose change on principle rather than trying to understand why something is happening or even trying the new whatever it is.

One of the severn principles of happiness is accept change........

EVOLUTION 1K PAINT IS AIR DRY AS APOSED TO 2K WHICK IS CHEMICALY HARDENED (AS FOR WATER BASED I WAS TOLD YOU NEED INFA RED HEATERS TO DRY IT AND IT TAKES TWICE AS LONG TO DRY (NOT GOOD FOR DUST AS ITS GOT MORE TIME TO SETTLE ITO YA FINISH))

A lot of people believe this about bird poo and that you dont get a very nice finish, BUT its rubbish as you still have to put a 2 pack lacquer over the top to seal it otherwise it would wash off like emulsion when it rains.
Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I have to say that sounds wrong to me too. I have used perfectly good water based gloss in the past and I can't see the paint technology being much different.

What we need is some paint supplier to come on here and put us straight, I have to admit to knowing very little so I will shut up now.

you dont need an oven for water bassed paints but you need a special spray booth, the water bassed paint uses an even air flow to dry it and they still dont have a good laquer to go over a base colour so will still need to use 2k laquer
