Why?
I think the high gearing is far better for road use.

I'm using one in my NA 1275 at the moment. Just a modified head, SW5 and LCB exhaust.

It will not win any drag races but for the long distance commute it's great. 45mpg on a run.

I would seriously consider it for a high spec 1275/1380 turbo for road use.

Approx 21 mph per 1000 revs in top with 165/60*12s. Still low for modern road use IMO.

In my opinion the 2.9 is best for road use, I can do 80 at a shade over 4000 rpm which seems sensible. The 3.1 I had previously seemed a little short for the daily hack. I'd ideally like a 3.0:1 but I don't think they made them. (I stand to be corrected!)

2.7 isnt very gearbox friendly. i use a 3.2 and can do 120 ish mph on my private road and can cruise at over 70mph (the national speed limit)

yes a 2.7 is higher but what good is that? do i need to be able to do 140mph?

each to there own as they say. a 2.7 is good for motorways but if you do a lot of motorway driving i would recomend a different car!!

Just dont use them with a c/r box!

Ive got a 3.2 in my metro with a sccr gear set and hill starts are difficult to say the least. (Impossible in some cases!) Dont even think about lighting the tyres up! *happy*

Great over 40mph ish tho!
