Does anyone know if or why you need different rear shock absorbers
for the van or estate, they have different ones listed on the minispares site....

The proper estate/van standard dampers have a built in light return spring in them, to help the damper return. Quite what the intended purpose of this is I am not quite sure, however I can categorically tell you that using standard saloon or uprated saloon (e.g. Spax) on an estate will be fine, as I ran this setup on my old Clubman Estate for some time.
