Hi all,

I recently purchased neilfenstein's turbo mini, When we bought it it was fine no smoke ran great, Havent driven it much as it requires an mot but past couple of weekends when iv run it and taken it up the road its been smoking quite badly on idle and when revving.
Did an oil change yesterday to see if that was the problem too thin oil but hasnt made any difference so today I did a compression test these are the results:

Dry
1, 14Bar
2, 12Bar
3, 14Bar
4, 14Bar

Squirt of oil
1, 15Bar
2, 13Bar
3, 14.5Bar
4, 14Bar

Cant find the figures in haynes manual to give a comparison against, but i guess the piston rings are shot?
Also took oil feed off of turbo to check this and there was still oily smoke.

Basically does it look like the piston rings are shot?

Thanks and sorry for all the writing matt *smiley*

are you shure its oil and not condensation in the exhaust system as it will take a while to dry out on short blasts just a theory

Rings sound OK to me from those compression figures. Maybe a bit worn, but nothing to be really worried about.

Ahh rite thanks Tom my dad was adament that the rings were ok but i cant work out what it could be. Its definatly oily smoke,

so do ya think a good blast and get her warmed up would clear it then?

Also i think its been run on unleaded without being changed to an unleaded head could the valve seals be worn?

Apparently it hasnt been driven properly since before christmas.

It runs great tho jus dont know why its smoking

Cheers matt

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

looking at the above threads

i would also like to add this,

the mixture on idle is too rich.
this is most likley the problem on a worn engine *wink*

Ahh thats good thinking benross thanks, also the oil pressure is nearly 70lbs on idle that seems too high could this also be a problem? and if so would a oil pressure adjustment thingy from minispares sort that and if so what pressure should it be at bearing in mind it has an oil cooler fitted.

Thanks Matt

NO! its not the oil pressure

please leave well alone on that one

the oil "PRESSURE" is only fed to the Crankshaft & cam bearings.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Its also fed to the turbo though ben and high pressure can cause some to pass and burn..

I would try reducing the pressure a shade. depends how high it goes when reving.

Sure TD had an issue with high oil pressure causing the turbo to smoke a bit and once reduced it went away. could be wrong though *happy*

You just need to shorten the pressure relief spring by a couple of mm or so and test it I run 55 psi at tickover if you cut to much from the spring you can pack it with a washer or two.
If you just cut a we bit from the spring you can cut a bit more a few times until you get it right.

"what am i thinking!" iain true buddy.

alan i tried this many years ago packing washers behind the relief spring to up the oil pressure,

but after many thousands of miles the washers disintrigrated & found there way into the oil system the fragments did not do any damage!

i suspect the filter took care of them.

Thanks for you're ideas chaps, Think i'm gonna have to take the engine out and check the bores as its smoking a lot and think il just get laughed at if i took it for an MOT!

I have a turbo engine in the garage that apparently has new bearings etc but standard bores haven't checked it tbh but bores looked good, I may put that in the car and then rebuild the engine i take out in slow time when money is good etc. Do ya think this is a good idea?

Thanks Matt
