MiniSpares seem to be cost effective - but more importantly; reliable. Replacement parts are also available cheaply and easilly.
My next gearset will be a MiniSpares unit.

the gearset i got from quaife doesnt have sprayed synchro surfaces and has to run bronze baulk rings. A right PITA if im honest, so unless they have changed since i bought the set in april/may time 2005 i'd be avoiding them.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

I find that hard to believe...

Quaife doesn't have any in-house moly-spraying facilities - hence why they don't have molysprayed synchro cones... I found this out when i had a quaife set many years ago. They made no mention of the lack of moly coating, and the need for bronze rings - I realised though. They just suggested i used bronze rings - but couldn't tell me where to get them from (MSpares had stopped selling them by then).
Quaife have had those gearsets sat on the shelf for AGES now... Annoying - because i'd sooner have a quaife than anything else. If they made some pukka bronze baulk-rings to go with them, I'd buy one in a shot...

up to what bhp do you think it is necassery to use s/c gearboxs?
or is it not worth risking not having 1 with a turbo moter?
were would you suggest to get a already built reconditond s/c gearbox from? and how much to expect to pay out?

get in touch with Dave Yardy, goes by the username 'icklemini' on the main mini forums. i paid under £700 for a totally rebuilt box with a clubman gearset and a 4 pin diff, he shimmed up the idler for me aswell as replacing the transfer case bearings. That price will probably have changed by now as i know minispares have raised their prices. He really is a sound bloke and knows his stuff with gearboxes...

I had problems to get a replacement laygear for my sc clubman gear set. (looked like MW's laygears) I phoned TranX and they told me that they don't produce them anymore!
I was lucky; I got one from MED. MSC didn't have one anymore.

Luckilly my TranX stuff seems to all be in good shape this year; Already been through one layshaft since i've bought it though - so hopefully when it finally goes, it'll all go at the same time!

I don't think that sort of price is at all over the top, quickly adding it up;

SC Gearkit £400 (?)
SC Drops £200
X Pin Diff £200

Plus all bearings, seals, shafts etc etc etc.......

Sounds fair enough to me!

just getting the usual stuff, priced it all up and that what the cost comes to other then for him to build it.
OK to provide a fully rebuilt box in an A+ casting based on the following:
New 'Evolution' ST Ratio SC Gears
New Genuine Baulk Rings
New Bearings (Main, 1stmotion, layshaft, idler, differential, etc)
New synchro springs
New Layshaft
New Gaskets
New Oil Seals
New 'Evolution' Cross pin diff + 3.44 Final drive
New Hi grade Central Pick Up pipe
Supplied with new gearbox-engine gaskets, oil seal and sump plug washer
Selector shaft 'anti-leak' and new bellows.

Supply A+ transfer case and overhaul with:
New bearings (idler and 1st motion)
New primary gear oil seal
New 'evolution' SC 1:1 ratio drop gears for 1275
Idler shimmed
Transfer case gasket

All assembled, done and ready to fit back to the engine for £1100 exchanging an old A+ unit. (surcharge on old unit is £50)

thats what im getting nothing special but you have a look at what other people sell, and for what price

looking at that list of parts £1100 aint a bad price at all now we know the spec of it

Evolution vs clubman - what's the difference? Apart from 100 pieces of gold of course...

You certainly won't go wrong with Dave Yardy.

the clubman uses 2 of the original gears from the donor box whereas the evolution uses all new cogs, and the ratio's are ever so slightly different i think.

Ok, let's put the record straight. Both the Minispares Clubman and ST are Evolution. Evolution is the brand, ST o r Clubman is the model.

ST: 6 new gears
Clubman retain the first and reverse gears from standard. Remember that first gear is similan on ALL 4sync boxes, so are easy to obtain.

Clubman is cheaper of course, but the downside on this is that the laygear has got only two berings as påer A+. The ST has got three.

As I generally loathe A+ stuff, Im using Evolution/Trannex (old) ST gears on all I've got.

bloody hell my ears are on fire *wink*

Nic & Vegard have hit the nail on head:
the clubman gearset uses the standard 1st and reverse gears.
the st is a complete new gearset

the ratios are also slightly different too:
Clubman ST
2.583 2.544
1.711 1.731
1.25 1.258
1 1

the 'clubman set' seems pretty much non-existant now.. : was certainly cheaper than the ST set

Prices have gone a bit silly now too - the ms SC gearsets have recently gone up and it seems every month theres another small increase in something (seen the cost of planet gears recently? - wasnt that long ago they were half their current price!)

Just starting on nogins in the next few days - that one is a complete everything from the primary gear downwards jobbie, all new evolution/MS straight cut except the crown wheel and pinion + xpin + tranny case + yadda yadda yadda..

still not sure about these layshafts though.. :o

TTFN,
Dave

(ps just realised this is my first post!! - have lurked here for ages too :o)
