hi just trying to detremine a problem i have, i know some of you have had drop gear problems and want to see if this is what is wrong with mine, i have that anoying little chatter going on at idle, so i put in the clutch and it goes, when i start to drive it sounds like i have a set of straight cut drops, or the closest i can think of the sound is a squeeking fan belt, done all the checks eg fan belt tight, so would you think it is the drop gears or maybe my release bearing i am thinking drops

It canot be the release bearing. If it was it would squeal when the clutch was depressed.

If the idler gear bearings are knackered then when driving, the torque will be causing the gear to thrust into a different position, this will give you the whine as the gear teeth contact in a different place. Could also be the first motion shaft nose bearing gone as well.

That's because the idlers are situated in aluminium. I guess you'll fi nd a lot of aluminium debris when you open it... On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:
