Sittingbourne, Kent.

Had a quick search but can't find an answer. I'll explain my situation:

I'm in the middle of sorting out my Vtec build and I set my mind on making it work with 10" wheels. I have a subframe that utilises mini running gear, and can get a custom FD made up to sort out the gearing issues. However, I wish to know if anyone is producing close to Vtec power figures (150bhp) and running on 10" wheels? I know Miglias run on 10s and produce that power, but I need to know about road tyres.

If anyone who could help, or point me in the right direction then I would greatly appreciate it!

Well put it this way - Quickest Vtec mini in England is Tony Wells with his Type-R unit that does 13.8 ish at 102mph ish.

There are a good deal of Turbo minis running this same time or signifiocantly quicker - all on 10" wheels...

Maybe someone will one-day build a Vtec mini that 'might' challenge the boundaries of 10" wheels - but I've not seen one yet... I've been very dissapointed by most i've seen for the 'claimed' power output and cost of the build...

Yea, I knew about Tony Wells, but I'm pretty sure he's not on 10s.

Didn't realise Williams was on 10s, will try and contact him. Just wanted to make sure it was possible.

Of course it's possible. There's no correlation between power and the size of the wheels.

Ok, well thats cheered me up a bit, anyone on a 7" width?

I've just been told that will that power the tyre can start to spin on the wheel which could cause the tyre to fail.

Also, if the tyre is being stretched it will place more stress on the sidewall which won't help matters either?

Perhaps the person that told you the tyres will spin on the rims was looking at a nova with spinners on it!

200bhp is not much power in reality. Its a lot in a mini, but tyre technology is the same for all cars.

the only time the tyre might spin is if your running lessthan about 10 psi to try to get more traction.

OK, well my fears have been alaid then! Seems it perfectly possible to run 10s with more than 150bhp!

Do you get through tyres quickly? I know its mostly all about throttle control, I used to have a powerful (not 150bhp though!) engine in my mini on 10s, but general driving, does that much power eat through tyres? Especially tyres as soft as A032Rs?

What sort of braking systems do people use? I should be running my KAD 4 pots without servo.

I think you can get the wheels to spin in the tyres using a early non progressive nitrous kit, slicks and sticky tarmac

Yes Dans spot on on the tyres,

Ben h that's a good point.

Funny enough i would say that more then 60% on here run 10"s, there comes a point where 10" or 13"s will spin and only a slick or LSD would help, but the slicks not ok for the road.

some people run the newer Yoko 10" tyres and they do grip better then the a008 ones, but they wear out faster which i why i run the a008 for now. It's your call really:)

wheels spinning in the tyres would destroy the bead...

the tyre would deflate and be knackered,,,

wouldnt it?

I've never even heard of the tyres spinning on the rims.

i think there was a 16v kad mini in one of the mags a while ago, which was on 13's because allegedly the tyres were ripped off on 10's (on slicks)

Whoever said that the tyres spin on the wheels on a mini is talking fluff. Tyres walk a bit on the rims on 5000bhp fuelers, but even then not all the time.

Have a look:

http://www.vintageminiracing.com/viewtopic.php?t=400

Also, on dragsters, the tyres are bolted to the rims so they don't move at all!

they use bead locks on the autograss cars, but that not to stop the tyre spining on the rim, but to stop it getting pushed off, and losing the air.
