It is a detent ball that stops the selectors moving out of gear on their own. You do need it. There should also be a sleeve as well.

There should be the metal sleeve, with 1 ball bearing and a spring. It is all compressed up together when you bolt the diff side cover on.

yeah i had that, i thought i remeber seeing a spring and a bb falling out, i found the srping and just asumed i had lost the sleve and ball bearing, but when i got a new sleve and bearing i noticed the sleve was already there, and i tried to push the spring and bb in but it wouldent conpress so i checked and 2 bbs fell out, lol
i just thought that if i remeber one falling out, but i certainly dident put any other springs back in anything when i put the diff back together... will see if it drives i supose*tongue*

Between oil filter housing and block??

If so, yes. If you don't use a gasket it will piss oil out.

i used cornflakes boxes on all my carb to inlet t head gaskets on my old 1040 and did thousands of miles with no trouble at all:) i asume they will be fine in this case with it being oil and not petrol?

Cheers, Dan
