On thursday I decided to take the frog to work. Got half way there, no problem. Indicators working fine.

Then, when i got to work, I indicated to turn into the work carpark... and nothing. the indicators stopped working.

I have no idea why. when the ignition is on, the hazards work fine, but the indicators (on the steering rack) do not.

when the ignition is off, neither works.

any ideas? fuses are all OK.

the hazards and flashers have 2 seperate fuses, and 2 seperate flasher units

the fuse for the indicators is located in the fuse box

the fuse for the hazards is normally tucked under the scuttle in the engine bay

i would have thought that both of these are fine though

it suggests that the flasher unit for the indicators is faulty, or the connections are a bit funny. I think they are both normally on the bulkhead in the engine bay

unplug one to find out which is the one for the hazards, and then have a play with the other, e.g. join both terminals together and see if the indicators stay on when put on

yeah, checked for the voltage at the flasher (altho i only think one flasher unit?)

nothing if i check between the two connectors, but 12v if i connect one and touch the earth on the engine... so i guess it might mean wherever that wire goes is bust? (green+orange iirc)

There are 2 flasher units. Definately. Switch the hazards on and see if the one you found clicks to make sure you are looking at the right one......

There should be one behind the clocks somewhere, and another on the bulkhead.

The orange/green is the supply to the flasher. When you indicate one way, this connects the falsher output to one side of the indicators.

Try connecting the wires together (and moving the ind stalk to one side) as Nic suggests to make sure the wiring to the indicators is OK.

Wicked. Thanks all, didnt realize there was an under dash flasher unit - it was broken. It says 'do not drop' so i can only imagine that i must have gone over a bump on the way to work (big country lanes!)

luckily, i had a spare flasher unit, so i've bunged that on, and all is good.

Cheers!

Good stuff! Those mechanical flasher units are pretty crap and fail quite often....

sure i'v posted this on here before, the electic flasher units are also avaliable in halfords, the black plastic ones, look on the back of the card packaging and it tells you whihc number goes to "B" which number goes to "L" and which one is a ground, wire it up and jobs a goodun. you only need an extra ground wire to fit it. done this converson to 3 old brittish cars now and all have had fault free flashers ever since :)

you can't use the electronic flasher units on the mk1 as the green light on the indicator stalk needs to be run from an inverted output on the flasher unit.....

found this out at the weekend!!

After much head scratching I got my indicators working with the said electonic flasher, for ages I could only get a horrible buzzing and dim indicators, finally the penny dropped, in the absence of a 12v battery some pillock was running the electricsfrom a battery charger!! borowed a battery and click.... click..... click.....
a healthy indicator,

Still couldn't get the green light to work though so pulled the unit apart and modded it so it would work.

Also don't bother thinking about buying one new, my local motor factors wanted 20 quid!!
