Do you actually need 11?

I haven't had any head gasket problems... and in fact a quick search on the forum shows only a few threads about head gastkets in general!

Is 11 studs old hat now we have decent gaskets?

For the work involved (e.g. fuck all) when the engine is apart, then I can't see why you wouldn't do it for belt and braces.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

drill holes in the block, tap them

drill holes in the head.

job done *smiley*

Use a gasket for position or i'm sure there are some sort of measurements done somewhere?

I'm on 9 studs... Don't intend to change anytime soon...
I find the gaskets tend to always go somewhere in the middle of the head - although i do recall JF's old engine (the one built up from a suspect block) kept popping the gasket at the water-pump end??? (confirm JF?)

confirm it was the waterpump end but the block was found to be "low" at that end.

i've got 11 studs but only as it was already done.

I wouldnt bother if it wasnt i dont think.

As long as head and block are flat and true 9 studs are more than up to the job, even with standard studs/nuts. I have gone for upgraded studs/nuts as at the time i was concered about the centre of the headgasket blowing being a 1380.

thats BS if you do a comparison between the clamping load of 9 stud & 11 the 11 stud always comes out tops!

as we are taking our engines to silly boost pressures & in some cases "large over bores" which the were not designed to be stressed to

you need all the clamping load you can get even with supposedly better head gaskets.
ok the 9 stud prevails but... i think this is just because its a pain in the rear to drill & tap the block & head etc,

most peeps find this daunting when faced with a possible fook! up & not having the tools or the inclination or skill to do so.

The reason that there are supposedly bad reports of 11 stud head gasket failure is…. the guy who has placed too much torque on the stud over the water pump housing & this causing block distorsion or at worst pulling through, rendering the block scrap.

Not in JF case though*wink*

if 9 studs are ok! lets look at having say 8 or 7 or 6*laughing*

the reason that the gasket blows between pots 2 & 3 is Inaudible detonation which kills this in most cases, as this is the weakest part of the gasket on a large bore motor

IMO alex it’s the 11 stud all the way.
you have been fortunate up to press or are you claiming higher boost figures than you actuall run!

Have to aggree with AF Ben! You been on the sauce when you typed that? *laughing*
I get the impression AF was just 'testing the water'; seeing what others thought. I've often thought the same tbh.
Belt and braces may well be fine, but if the trousers fit fine to begin with.... *smiley*

TD is exactly right... I was asked the question by a student of mine. I didn't know the answer, so I asked on here!

The only experience I have is of the engines I have built and run...

Questions are how we learn, no one should be ribbed for even the simplest of questions :)

You've just set a precidence; I only expressed my opinion, not a fact... *wink* Ben equally had a good point about the fact that if they are there, why not use them?

Thanks for the compliment - but i don't consider myself a guru, or a grur for that matter... Just because i say something, doesn't mean it's totally correct or factual. "The man who never made a mistake, only made f**k all" as a wise engineer once told me...

leeds/wakefield.

i have had a gasked blow from the waterpump end, but it was a shit cheep copper thing and i couldn't honestly tell you if there was or was not any probs with the mating faces.

i don't however necessarily agree with the inaudible detonation theory being the cause of the gaskets blowing between 2@3. its got to be the old favorite of Daves ,the cam phasing and firing order.leading to extra heat in the ose two cyls.

The centre inter bore region is the hottest of the three.
