The turbo "type" mains do not have the oil groove in the lower shell. This gives a bigger bearing area, and can support more load.

However, all of the later 1275 engines adopted this type of main bearing, I think from 1986 (?) onwards.

And to be even more technical, none of the big names when it comes to A-series engine building likes the new type.
The mains should be crossdrilled for this which they are NOT.

any late ish A plus block will have solid shells in thre caps on the mains, and the centre groove for the tang, even if you have an early block [even A series] still use the later shells and file thr groove in the right place,

I don't neccesarilly agree with that to be honest... just look at the evidence - If it was a problem, we'd be spinning mains left right and centre. I can't EVER remember anyone doing that for as long as this site has been going...

And putting my engineer hat one, something with a hole in it is generally weaker than something without a hole in it. I can't see that i'll ever cross-drill a crank until the time that i start turning past 7500 rpm - which will be never as long as i'm sticking to a turbo...

I agree with you Dave, that's why I wrote "should". I find it interesting that we don't have more spun mains. All other manufacturers using these kind of bearings have cross drilled mains. (Germany)
Also, some old S cranks and ALL cranks from MED have got cross drilled mains as far as I know.

I found this article on turbo mains/through drilled main journals. Worth a read

No, that article is NOT worth a read as it is W R O N G !!!!!!

No Metro crank ever had through drilled mains.
The only ones were the MK2 S-crankshaft.

Someone should contact Minimania about that rubbish article.

Making a few assumptions, you'd save 0.489kg.

I think crank life would be somewhat compromised though.

You're probably joking, (if you don't need them NONE of us peasant do!), but my understanding is that it stops all the oil centrifuging out of the crank at very high rpm. Like 9000rpm lol.

Maybe, not sure now!

we are talking MAINS here .

Yep, not a huge amount of centripetal force at a 1" radius from the crank centreline......
