So the head gasket on my 998 road mini keeps blowing. Firts time between 2 and 3, then between 3 and 4, and just now I take of the head and it;'s gone between 1 and 2.

all the surfaces look good but the gaskets (Payen copper type) are only lasting around 1200 miles.

I'm probably goint to slap it back on with another gasket, making sure it's super clean.

Any other thoughts/advice?

Cheers

Wil

then have a play with the glass...

If its mecury floated glass its very very flat... a bit of paste and some blue will soon show up any funny spots.

I haven't just it for a while, but it worked a treat on a lawnmower head a repair shop near me couldnt sort lol

I'd change the studs as a first measure - unless you're convinced they haven't been 'abused' (overtightened) at any point...
Check the accuraccy / repeatability of your torque wrench?
Try a completely different head gasket?

How is it blowing Wil? You can usually gather some info from the area it has been leaking. Are you sure your radiator and water pump are up to scratch?

Well it's all back together now.

The engine was completly unabused when I got it I was the first to remove the head, so studs are fine I reckon.

It's blowing between the fire rings, but never the same pair and the others always look fine.

We'll see how it goes.

Might be worth doing a plug chop on it if you can after a decent run.

Near Daventry, midlands

if it happens again, try using a different torque wrench. A friend had the same problem, his wrench was over-torquing the head and had actually stretched some studs.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Well it got me to work and I just checked my torque wrench aginst the lab one and its about 1Nm out. But as I always put it to 70 ratther than 68 it's about spot on, it was consistant too.

Quite a lot of the time we find on the 998's that the problem is the head. If you can 'lick' a bit off i think that'll sort you.
