I am in the process of putting the diff back in the gearbox casing... however is there a step by step off how to do this as I dont quite understand the Haynes manual...

I have fitted diff casing securly as advised and attached the flywheel side, side panel with gasket and I am onto loosely fitting the left side panel, now the haynes says tight against the bearing but I cant get a feel for when tight is to tight... I dont want to break the bearing or over tighting the panel...

Also I assume minispares will sell the diff shims if I need them?

I have had a search about guys but cant find much info on here...

Any help would be great

Cheers
Dan

The main diff casing needs to be in place but loose to allow the diff bearings to move. Then you fit the side covers as per the manual.

You only really need to nip the bolts up securely enough to allow you to measure the gap. They don't need to be super tight, just enough to secure the cover.

I notice theres a fair amount of travel in the differential and crown assembly in the casing before the crown wheel hits the casing... how do you locate this properly?
As this could affect the preload couldnt it?

You bias the entire assembly one way, then nup the covers up to measure the gap, this allows you to select the correct shims, then you bolt it all up, the shims mean that the diff has a compressive force across it, so it cannot move.

you need 1 thou pre load if iu remeber right.

you need a micro to measure gasket then measure as per tom above.

what you looking at is 1 thou tighter clearance with the shims to the gasket thickness.

eg 11 thou gasket thickness you need a 10 thou gap with the shims.

if that makes sense.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas
