After reading what dave wrote about ignition module voltages in another post:

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/index.php?p=vt&tid=775

I think i have tracked down my missfire problem.

I have a 1989 model with a balast ressister - so my coil should be running at 9 volts i belive. I run a 9v Lucas Gold coil.

I have always had a missfire at low revs ie. up to 2500ish, am i right in thinking the metro distributer and ignition module is ment to run at 12 volts so once the revs pick up and the system voltage rises the ignition moduel gets what it needs and the missfire goes away.... The missfire gets worse every few months - i frequently go to the scrapppy and get new ignition modules

Any input anyone??? (sorry the post is a bit long winded)

The electronic system needs 12volts...

New wires please!

Almost certain the resistance of the 'Gold' coil is too high for the ign modules...

I have both in my 'shed' at home - i'll check the resistance tonight...

yes the gold luca is for ballasted ignition onmy and can't work with electronic ignition, i have choosen a bosch coil from a golf mk2 to ignite mine, but any of the std electronic coil will make a very good job

it uses a resistiave wire from terminal one (i think) on the fuzebox to the + terminal of the coil. its white with a pink tracer, jsut replace this with normal wire.

Yeah as evo says just run a new switched live (i.e. is only live with the ignition on, cant remember which one it is!) straight from the fuse box. *happy*

I just measure a Bosch 'electronic' coil and a lucas gold, and the bosh one read 1 ohmn, the lucas Gold 3 ohms... This means in theory, the Lucas gold should work fine with the electronic module as it is switching a smaller current...

I suspect however it is to do with the 'inductance' of the two coils being different (somet you can't easilly measure!).

best way to compare would be to hook an ammeter up with the coil on an engine. and note current against revs. that wil take into acount any change in the impedance due to the inductance of the coil itself.

bit of a hastle though.

If its any help, im running a gold coil with the later electric dizzy and have no problems whatsoever. This is at 12v. on a 12v coil...
