So with the feed being a bugger (see other post) I'm now struggling with the return.

Because of the T2 adaptor plate and the slightly shorter 998 block, the oil return from the T2 is really too low to go back into the fuel pump hole.

I know I could get something tig-welded into the back of the box, but I'm short of time now.

So, I thought that it might be possible to use the spedo drive. We don't use it and it seems a nice return for the oil. It is above the "max" oil point on the dipstick, and obviously with the engine running the oil level will be much lower than the "max" piont.

But is it too low? especially considering oil surge around right handers?

Opinions please.

Cheers

Wil

I'm at the "everything is conspiring against me" stage of the project. I need to solve these oil problems, and then the exhaust and intercooler piping then we're home and dry............

If the engines in and you dont want to take it apart wil, how about going in at the back of the timing chain cover?

iam quite sure the seal will hold out!

theres loads of suitable hoses in you locall parts shop.

just a thought.

Can't do the timing chain cover as we run a belt drive.

Engine isn't in yet.

How about feeding it back onto the top of the diff housing, above the crownwheel?

I am thinking that it could work well, mainly because you can remove it from the gearbox and drill/TIG weld a pipe stub on there with it seperate from everything else, so no swarf can get into the box.

But also, seeing as you run your car in short hillclimbs and sprints, maybe feeding nice warm (and hence thinner) oil out of the turbo onto the crownwheel could possibly reduce a bit of drag through the geartrain? Or am I talking bollocks, every little helps....???

Wil,
I've looked at this before, and reckon that if you cut the T2 return 'fitting' down (to about 1/4" above the 'nut' ) and then weld an angle on there, you should get it to match up with the standard oil drain.
A good source of tube (even has a bend already in it) is a standard oil pickup pipe.

This is only 5/8" though... and the standard return plate is 19mm I recall - so you then have a problem mating it to the block.
Easiest option is to either make a new return plate - purchase one (just a few quid) and use a short piece of the oil-pickup pipe hose on it.

Remember to purchase a suitable piece of hose aswell *wink*

oh - IMO using a 5/8 drain, whilst not ideal in theory - is plenty good enough...

As usual, sound advice.

I've considered the cutting the T2 return fitting and welding a pipe, but it is quite tight. Will have a propper measure up tonight..

I managed to cut my oil return down. A bit of cutting and welding and it will fit. Was a pain in the ass though, but it is possible.

I made my own return plate, so I could angle the return.
