finally got round to having a proper look at me turbo engine today so i took off the head/manifolds/carb/turbo etc to give em all a cleaning and a check over. ive got a couple of questions now though so here goes.

are all the turbo heads double sprung? cos mine is.

on my inlet theres a big curly pipe which i presume is for the heated manifold. Can i cut this off cos i dont use the heated manifold on my N/A engine and i guess it'll be the same for the turbo.

does anyone know where i can get a diagram of how to plumb in the turbo engine, water pipes, oil pipes, everything. i've seen the diagram for the fuel in the how to section, very helpful!

sorry for the long post, just want to get this engine right first time.

cheers, Nick.

yes Bud all turbo heads have double springs, this isn't for the camshaft lift (std) but to counter act the pressure coming thru the inlet and exhaust making the valves harder to close.
the curly pipe is for water cooling the inlet manifold that is heated by the big peace of iron just under it (the gas going in it are at 900/1100?C ).
don't have my car anymore so difficult to post pics but sure another will do, when you are building it , take a little time to sort some water pipes from the cy head at the genuine water heater take of and send it back to the top hose of the radiator.

Of the 12g940s heads... except old cooper stuff (shich I know nothing about) only the turbo has double valve springs as std.

You can cut that pipe off... The air going through the carb is hot anyway (nice inefficent turbo!) so theres no risk of carb freezing or poor fuel atomisation. As to wether you should run it or not... I don't know!

Oil pipes are easy... theres only 4 more than usual... one to the turbo, one from the turbo and then theres the connection and return to an oil coller if you choose to run one!

Water is no different to any other mini... fueling is on this site and valume/boost lines depend on how you are setting your car up *happy*

The best place to get diagrams from is the Haynes Austin Metro manual - its got lots and lots of practical information about the metty turbo

Alex!
you can't cut these manifold water pipes, it isn't as for the n/a, as you said the air is heated before the manifold, but this time this water pipes are needed TO COOL it from the high heat produced just under it, if you doubt about this, Try to put your hand on the manifold (inlet after a run...), *laughing*

You can cut the pipes and still run the water cooler/heated manifold...

I'm going to be doing some testing to see what the effects it actually has.

I am 99% sure mg metros did not have double valve springs... at least none of the head I have seen or have do.

i'm pretty sure the MG's didnt have double springs either, i've got one in my car at the moment and my original engine a 1275 cooper carb didn't have em either and they are the same engines.

i haven't cut the pipe down yet anyway, decided to paint the garage instead.
