Yo.
Brought the mini to work today, and went round a roundabout a bit quick.... and then stalled.

Started it up again, moved about 10 meters, and stalled again.

Started it up yet again, and drove the rest of the way (10 miles) without a hickup.

The car had half a tank of petrol.

I'm guessing that the fuel pickup in my tank just sucked in a bit of air? or is there something more sinister than that?

Ta :)

I've not suffered fuel surge in a mini before...

but I have suffered from a blocked tank filter... as jim will remember at Llandow!

It could be that...

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

depends how the pickup has been done i guess.

Did the pump sound different?

its obviously something daft. the problem is it will most likely not happen again or atleast very infrequently then it will be hard to find!!

cool to here the frogs been used and abused on the road *smiley*

It's an SPI tank isnt it, so however that pickup is..

Jim thinks it might be a electrical fault.. I'll have a proper look this weekend :)

If the spi has the same pickup as a mpi, they always run above half a tankfull

I think the fuel gauge is set to show empty when they are about half full

I can't see that air getting in the fuelline at the tank would cause the car to stop, there is enough fuel in the float bowl to run the car for ages. And because of the regulator the air is most likely to be returned to the tank.

Even if you had your foot down, you'd need a seriouse amount of air in the fuel line to stop the car.

Could be somthing silly like the dashpot sticking a bit. Electrical is also a possibility. I once had a 2CV that used to stop after wellying it round a rooundabout. The extreem angles achieved when cornering caused the coil leads to fall off.

Will you are right about the fuel in the float being plenty to keep it running.

But remember than If the pump sucks air the pressure in the fuel lines will drop off dramaticly - so the fuel in the float chamber wont overcome the air pressure in the carb - so it wont suck any fuel

Won't the air bubbles in the fuel-line be compressed to the same pressure as the fuel once the pump is pumping fuel agian?

But yes, on boost with air in the pump, the fuel would dissapear and enghine would lose power.

I had a not dis-similar experience with my GTM.
On a country road it suddenly lost all power after a few hundred yards of crawling along there was a lurch and then the car ran fine.
Turns out that due to a stripped thread on my dizzy one side of the cap had lifted.
The sudden lurch had knocked it back into place and it ran perfectly to get me to work and back.
Bit of lock tight sorted it.
Only other similar experience was a total loss of power and engine cut out. That was cured by filling the fuel tank!!

Just a thought. Is it possible on a Hif44T to adjust the float level? I know it's possible on old bike carbs.
I just thought of it as my car runs lean in fourth. Could increasing the float level be of any use?
