i've searched but found nothing.

Whats the quickest way of removing the pin that holds The gear rod to the gear box?

In the past i've always spend ages hitting them out with various bolts, nails, old drill bits etc etc but im in a rush tomorrow.

Which pin is best to remove aswell the horizontal or vertical?

Thanks

Andy

I have never had a problem removing the horizontal roll pin using the correct sized punch and a hammer while its in 3rd gear tapping it out towards the passenger side.

I do the horizontal one and use one of them tiny metal screw drivers so the blade fits through the hole so it don't slip off

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

i HATE doing this, im ultra crap at it too

-pop the car in reverse
-hit the one out that then heads towards the diff output housing (closest one to the engine i think)
-try to push the car out of the way and curse as its in reverse

i bought a punch that is the right size for it, but its still a hard job, what i find best is a handy step dad......

(hells bells 3 replies. ill have to try the 3rd gear method, it could save me having to remove my exhaust bracket)

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

these are a pain most of the time, you get it firs time or you wrestle with it.

the correct size punch is important.

a "High Tensile cap screw"

the right dia with a nylock nut like bud says does away with it

a pit or ramp is the best way to make these easy to remove! forgot to mention that bit.

its so much harder when you cant swing the hammer properly!!! *happy*

I don't know why people find these so difficult!

Maybe it is the amount of practise I have had with breaking 75+ Minis......!!!

A proper punch makes life easy. Ideally one that has a small "pip" on the end that locates in the centre of the roll pin bore so it doesn't jump off.

After much trial and error I have always found reverse gear to be the best option, and then a good FIRM twat with a hammer and out it comes. If you are struggling, make your life easier and get the car higher up in the air, usually makes life easier in most cases.

but i no most wont be able to do that as they havent got a removable front.

but still thats life

well fuck me it came out in the quickest time ever. i found a suitable sized nail (approx 4" length and about the same as the pin) stuck it in reverse hit it once and thought it sounded nice.
hit it again and it was halfwy out.
and with my third strike the bastard was on the floor. result

cheers guys

IMHO most of the problems are caused by people forcing the wrong (metric) roll pin into the linkage. As for getting them out I've found the horizontal one is easiest to get out using the correct punch, or a 4.5 angle grinder works well!

i hate that crappy little pin. i also find it a pain in the arse doin the pins that hold the pedals to the brake and clutch master cylinders, then fiddling round getting the split pin in and splitting it, i think im going try a R clip on it next time.
