Hi,

I've rebuilt my diff this afternoon. As the original diff was as loose as a cabinet minister, I've replaced the cage bearing, pin, planet wheels and thrust washers on the planets and output shafts.

Problem is it is so bloody stiff that I can't turn it by hand unless I back off the crown wheel bolts half a turn.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Will it loosen with a bit of use or should I shim the carrier from the crown wheel.

Help appreciated.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

you have done something wrong!

go back and check your work, you should be able to spin this by your hand fairly easily.

I have just rebuilt it with the original planet gear thrust washers which were thinner than the new items.

It seemed to be going together better but went solid as I tightened up the crown wheels bolts.

I think it may be the repacement planet wheels, the teeth look considerable thicker than the originals.

Have you fitted the mica washers behind the output shafts?

Tom,

I have fitted the mica washers.

According to Minispares, although they came from Min-Its, the Mica thrust washers are now only available at 0.043" thick whereas the originals were 0.035". The planet thrust washers also look thicker.

Apparently the planet gears can also vary in height.

I think it is a componding of minimal clearance that is causing the problem.

My next step is to rebuild it with the original planet wheels and see if that works.

Anyone want to buy a set of bushed planet wheels?????

Minispares x pin it will be for the turbo.

But this is for the NA 1275 EFI test mule engine!!!

I've ordered various different bits from different sources to see if I can get a setup that works. I'm sure it's down to the thrust washers being too thick and brand new planet wheels.

I'll update you at the weekend when I next get a chance to go in the workshop.

wahst it like with out the crown wheel on the cage.
easiest way to tell is that you should be able to push and pull the out put shafts very slighlty.

were did you get the planets from as im sure there is only one supplier of these but ive just done wolfies 4 pin dif with no probs using all new parts so must be just the way you have put it together.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I think the problem is due to the planets.

These are the Minispares DAM6624BUSHED.

Anyway, I've just rebuilt the diff again, this time with some other, thinner mica thrust washers. The first ones were genuine Rover, but apparently are a lot thicker than they should be. OK if you have worn planets but too thick otherwise.

Well the diff now turns by hand, although it is reasonably stiff.

As I seem to have run out of options other than to put the worn planets back in, I am going to leave it at that.

Thanks for the offer, but i've got a spare in the 998 that will be redundant.

I'm going to leave it and hope that it loosens with a bit of use. If it seizes then I'll get it out and sort it.

Have you considered lapping the planet wheels into their thrust washers? It may just remove the odd high spot that is causing your problem?
