the head of the bolt has the 12 point thing on it, not like the normal 6 point bolt if you see what i mean or also known as a star head or inverted torx bolt

there for an aray of things nothing specific at the mo, i just find them easier to use then normal bolts, plus they have better properties eg higher tensile strengh, thought some one might now where to find them, but i know there not usually used on cars more arcraft stuff

These are NAS bolts, although other specs exist. These are pretty much as good a bolt as you can buy and the price reflects it!!!!! They aint cheap. You have to use them with the correct washers as they are bevelled as the underside of the head has a much larger radius than normal. You can get them from trident race supplies at silverstone, just by the entrance to the circuit.

I can't really see what applications would really require such special bolts personally.

Apart from the usual suspects, big ends, mains, maybe head bolts, for everything else a 12.9 grade cap head is more than strong enough.

There are advantages to using these bolts (i include normal six sided nas bolts in this) because you can get them in the exact length you need. You buy these bolts based on the grip length (shank or unthreaded portion). This means you can support all loads on the grip where it should be, you should never have the thread running through the component you are bolting down. The thread is only there to put a nut on. For a lot of jobs you can buy a nornal cap and cut of the thread you dont need. But cap heads grip length can vary between batches and is only available in a few sizes. Nas bolts come in length increments of 1/16" and you can get most styles with a choice of 2 thread lengths

leeds/wakefield.

Finning cat , the earth mover people do all this stuff, catalogue with nuts and bolt section and not a lot of money for there normal high strength bolts ,but the 12 point bolts are expensive.
i used to use these on my hardy spicer driveshaft joints . nearly £3.00 each for a 5/16 x1".
