Some tips please, I always seem to damage the gelcoat.

I'd tape over the hole, and drill slowly with a sharp drill.. |

Use a very sharp metal drill bit. If you can, grind the drill with a shallower angle at the tip.

Wood bits are definatly better for smaller holes, I reckon those flat wood bits should work for larger holes and holesaws for really big holes. go through from the gel coat side and use a light pressure and generally go easy, i reckon a slowish speed should help too, around 750 rpm?
