When putting the idler gear back on, theres two ways round it can go. I cant see anything to cause trouble with which way round it goes and the haynes says nothing.

The only difference is on one end of the "axel" has a large hole and the other side has a small hole in the centre

if one end has a larger dimple.....

id put end with the bigger dimple in the transfer case, and the small dimple side end in the box side.

simply because then there might be a slightly larger 'reservoir' of oil to support the transfer case bearing.

cant see it making much difference though to be fair!
