Hi, before this engine was taken out there was a loud rattling which we thought was the timing chain, but ive takne the cover off and it all looks perfect. The timing chain is as old as the engine, about 3000-4000 miles or whatever it is, and its a dual type one.

The tentioner was slightly to one side though that might have been the problem.

Otherwise, it might have been something rattley in the old gearbox that was on it

some of the teeth on the big sprocket look very worn, especially the ones in the 6 and 7 o clock position

Agree with Leaonard - could be the picture though...
Take it off and properly inspect it all by twisting and rotating the chain.

Also - the tensioner doesn't act centrally on the chain - it's designed for a simplex (single row) chain. As it's on a duplex - and doesn't sit centrally - you shouldn't 'tension' the tensioner. Instead, just fit it such that it takes up the slack in the chain, but not actually putting any kind of load or tension on the chain.

back!!

i felt the tension of it and it it just resting on it, its not forcing it or anything and it feels right.

I think this one might be a different tensioner because its on both chains

Just wondering right, is there any way at all, that the timing chain can ever turn backwards...?

thing is, it was out of place when i took the cover off, and i think that it might have been pulled the wrong way arround the chain and maybe one of the "legs" on the bottom wasnt in place properly, so it was on an angle.

Could that have happened could the chain have moved backwards to cause that?

Only thing I can immediately see is the oil flinger is on back-to-front - and looks like it's been contacting something?

Check the timing cover.

Also - check the countersunk screws in the bottom of the backplate are indeed countersunk, and that they haven't unwound...

Too bloomin right...

I was hapy to help you before... But now I've found out you're a puddle jumper, you can forget it!

Ok - the round 'disc' that is between the chain and the woodruff key on the crank is called an oil flinger;it's purpose is to 'fling' oil away from itself - usually to lubricate other areas - eg the chain... And it looks to be on back to front? and looks shiny around the 'outer' face like it's been rubbing on something (the timing cover)?

As dave has said - looks like the flinger is the wrong way around..

Also the tensioner is broken! - Hence the rattle (seen it a few times) - Look at the grren 'plastic' acting against the chain.. towards the bottom...

Dave

The oil flinger usually has an F stamped in. This does not mean France, it means Front!
