Built up my N/A 1380 today, couldnt get the cam timed in for the life of me, then realised timing wheel was moving on the crank...great, so got that done then couldnt get the centre main cap torqued up...

Has anyone has their main bolts stretch on them?
ill post up a picture later on, but basically it just wouldnt torque up to 70 lb/ft, so i whipped it out and the bolt was stretching halfway along the thread. I was just pleased I hadnt sheared the threads in the block.

Spent an hour and a half taking engines apart to get different idler shims, finally got the endfloat down to 6 thou.

Then, had just got the flywheel on when i spied the block/box 'O' ring on the bench, swine, so split it and built it back up, again, just got the flywheel on, but again had a funny feeling something was amiss....this time it was the idler gear hiding under a rag on the bench LOL...so pulled the transfer case off and put that back in!

Anyway, got it all done now, gonna mark up the flywheel and damper up for TDC + the timing marks tomorrow to make life easier in the future. Gonna make a bracket to hold the crank sensor tomorrow aswell.

Ahhh bath time!

You cant have it easy mate, you should know that by now lol.

At least you found the problems now, rather than when you try and run it, shows you are doing a good job.

Joe - If this bolt was the standard ones - then ditch them all - just to be on the safe side.

If it's the ones for the centre-strap (longer than normal) then check they are of the suitable grade. As a guide - they should have six lines on the heads. If they only have three - then that 'might' be ok - but i wouldn't use them. If they have nothing - then you've got magic 'putty steel' bolts...

Sounds like you're trying to do too much when tired. If you get like that, just down-tools and do it another day. That's when f** ups happen!

Yeah it was the longer centre main strap ones, will check on the number of lines tomorrow.

TBH i think it will probably be my torque wrench that need recalibrating if anything, hasnt been done in a few years now so is probably way out.

I know what you mean about working when tired, im fortunate enough to have mass tea brewing equipment on-site, and copious amounts of rich tea biscuits to hand, so that helps a little, LOL.

All these things are sent to try us, you will get there in the end!

I agree with dave though, some days you just can't seem to do right whatever you do, these are the days to down tools and walk away, because inevitably sooner or later you are going to make a massive boo boo.

Like for example dropping a pushrod down from the block face with no followers in so it goes all the way into the gearbox, been there done that what a muppet......

heres a pic of the bolts, its a 3 line one and you can see (i hope) where its stretched along the thread....

this was only at 70lb/ft...

the ones in there now are the 6 line ones, so thats a one less thing to worry about.
