Changing the cam today and noticed 3 maybe 4 of the middle ones are quite badly pitted, any idea what causes this.

Pitting is an interesting one, probably just caused by general wear over the life of the engine in Dangerous's case. Microwelding if it occurs usually causes a lot more damage, remember the cam surface is only hard for a few thou, so as soon as microwelding starts to occur, you get visible obvious damage to the surface.

Jackman pulled these out of his 78000mile 92 Cooper SPi. They are pitted but I didnt think they looked too bad On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:

Seems interesting that only 1 or maybe 2 out of 8 are a lot worse than the rest. If it is the two nearest the centre the only thing I can think of is maybe they are not getting as much oil splash, as they are near the centre main, rather than nearer a crank web?

the ones near the 'front' of the engine (speedo drive end) always worse as they have less splash, well the cam lobes are, not sure on the followers.
I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

I've torn donw several A+ engine now, and it seems as camshaft survive, but followers are often pitted. Could it be rubbish followers from the factory? I've njever ahd any pitting on Minispares followers, although I've never driven 50000miles after a rebuild either though. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

May be so on a transverse engine but what is the cam/follower wear like on inline engines. Now this is pure theory with little thought as to what might be happening. on transverse engines the gears are submersed in unfiltered engine oil, that we all know. I would suspect that the oil is not 'splashed' by the main gear set as they are totaly submersed. The final drive how ever, the top of which sits taller and may be even slightly above the level of oil. It is the final drive that causes the majority of splashing, aiming unfiltered oil at folowers 5 and 6, possibly carrying particles of crud with it. Just a thought and not realy refined as it may be utter crap and I cant be arsed thinking it through as its easter week end ![]() ![]() ![]() On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:

Maybe we should be spraying the followers as well as the pistons with oil ![]() MW Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

i still think oil fed cam lobes would be a super idea and cant cost that much to do from a blank once the cast is made.

I have seen a few A+ cams which are cross drilled to oil feed the followers. This was on my mates miglia, they still get cam follower wear. But it does help On 15th May, 2009 TurboDave said:

Pete, what about (dare i say it) STP and similar additives... Do they have this magic ingredient which is missing from the oil? On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:

No help to anyone making stuff up. LOL Never a truer word said What about the old Magnatec stuff?? I used this all the time on previous minis. Unfortunetly never got the cance to pull the last one apart though What about grades?? I always use 10W40 and thought that was the norm. But after a long break from the Mini scene till last year, I now find some people on other forums are recommending other grades. Whats the score with this, or have I got it wrong from day one?? This year I plan to run a pre filter before the oil pump, this will also give me more space up front of the engine. On 15th May, 2009 TurboDave said:
