any truth that if your compressor bolt has not been touched
(ie. ground for balancing) that this means that the turbine & compressor wheels were balanced seperatly therefore no need for balancing after a rebuild
i read it somewhere that garrett would grind bolt to balance the turbo as a whole therefore needing to mark wheel before taking it off
also stated that garrett preformed both methods

I've just come across a page that seems to answer this:
http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/turborebuild.html

(from turbo balancing section)
"If the nut appears to be ground down then the turbine wheel and shaft and the compressor wheel (and nut) were balanced together. If the nut is not ground down then the wheels were done individually. If the wheels were done individually then it is not absolutely necessary to mark them and get them in the same location as they were prior to removal."

a friend of mine can balance turbines and thinks he may be able to balance stuff as small as a T2 or T3 but has asked an important question. how fast do you have to spin the turbo and to what tolerance does it have to be balanced.
