Hi I am having trouble starting my new engine that I have just fitted. When i turn the key the starter motor just locks solid.
I have a pre verto flywheel, so I am using the old type starter
with the solenoid on the inner wing. So now I am thinking I may have the later type ring gear fitted doe's anyone know the visual differences or have any pictures

hope this makes sense

thanks for any help

The pre verto ring gear has a chamfer on the outer(inner wing) side,as it engages from this side

Look at the ring gear and if you can see a leading edge on it it is a pre engages flywheel (starter with solenoid on it)(metro/late mini)

yes it turns freely by hand and its a ultra light billet type flywheel. No chamfer on ring gear at all

The problem is that there are two different types of starters, inertia and pre-engaged.

There are also two different type of ring gear, 107 or 129 teeth for the inertia and pre-enegaged starter respectively.

There are also two diffrent types of flywheel, verto or pre-verto. These were fitted with the 107 or 129 teeth ring gear at the factory dependant on starter to be used.

I think it all went pre-engaged and verto from the mid eighties, but before that they were using inertia starters, 107 teeth flywheels on verto flywheels.

To cause further confusion, aftermarket sources are fitting pre-engaged 129 teeth ring gears to pre-verto flywheels!!

It does not necessarily follow that if you have a non-verto flywheel that you should use an inertia starter and vice-versa.

You need to count the teeth on the ring gear and use the appropriate starter.

Good information there Axel on the ring gear teeth counts.

I will place in another section for reference.
