the recent 'flywheel' thread reminded me of this as im in a similare predicament.

my ultralite came with a ring gear for an inertia starter (chamfered edge on the ring gear teeth).

Ive got an inertia starter, but i now beleive i need a separate solenoid aswell (which makes sense)??

Basically could someone outline what i need to use this inertia starter instead of my old pre engaged one?

Cheers guys

Flywheel threads are all the rage at the minute!

Right im going to be careful what i say through fear of being gunned down......

If you had a pre-engaged started fitted and you want to revert to an inertia starter you will indeed require the solenoid which mounts on the inner wing.
You will have to make some alterations to your wiring obviously because before the solenoid was attached to the started. If you have a haynes manual look at older model mini wiring diagrams where inertia starters are used and you should be able to see which wires go where on the solenoid.

I had to do a similar thing but i went from inertia to pre-engaged. Feel free to correct me anyone.

Whats going to break next!?

Just cut/shut the wiring. It's easy to do as you're shortening it - not lengthening it....

That's what i'd do anyroood.

Yes, it is an easy job to shorten the loom to suit the seperate solenoid, you need to shorten the main battery cable slightly and attach it to the solenoid, you then need another short length of cable to go from the solenoid to the starter motor. The wire that send the starter signal to the motor also needs shortening to suit the solenoid position (white/red cable).
You will then need to shorten three off thick brown wires from the alternator/feed to the loom.

As for wiring it up, the battery cable and three thick brown wires go to the large stud one side of the solenoid. The short thick cable to the starter goes the other side, and the red/white to the spade terminal between the two studs.

I did this exact mod to a pre-engaged loom when I wired the Frog for AlexB, works a treat.

Mint, cheers guys.

Might be an idea to stick this in the 'How to' section?
