Hi, went to kent from west yorkshire yesterday to pick up my mg metro turbo. its all in really good condition, loads of new parts including dif, gearbox, clutch and loads of other mechanical bits.

Im really happy with the car, although on the way home at 70mph on the A1 over 100miles from home it broke!all of a sudden the oil light came on and the high water temp light.

I straight away pulled over and turned ignition off with smoke bellowing out of the bonnet. Smelled like burning oil. Seemed like the most of the smoke was coming from round hte back of the engine i was hoping it wasnt the turbo! I didnt try start it again, ive just left it since. We managed to tow it home. Im new to turbo A series minis so i didnt really know what to look for so i was hoping somone could give me some advice :(

Broken oil feed pipe perhaps??

Doesn't sound good that the water temp was through the roof though :(

yeah first thing i thought of was a broken oil feed pipe!

Was the temp reading high or did the light just come on? If it was consistantly reading high then there might be a problem but if just the light came on maybe its the wiring thats funny. Strange that both the oil and temp lights came on together.

Oil feed goes from the front of the block to the top of the turbo. Its a steel pipe held in place where the mini engine steady goes. They're known to fracture and most people replace with a braided hose.

RIGHT sorted it. Fanbelt had snapped, the oil was just burning off the engine. I feel really stupid now, only just saw the car for first time in the ligth after asking here, i was just asking to see where i should check. It had caused it to overheat. When i just checked it, its used no oil, ive filled up the water again and it started on first turn over. Im really sorry for wasting your time, i just wanted to check possibilities before i tried starting it again.

Thankyou very much

james

So was it the battery light then not the oil or water lights?

no, the oil light came on too, thats what worried me! I am thinking though, it could be because i turned the ignition off!!

By doing that though, i think i have broke my turbo on it. Its the only part of the engine that hasnt been rebuilt.

At 3500rpm in any gear under load (accelerating) it missfires and pops, the car actually shudders forwards, if i release the throttle for a few seconds, then stab it again, it picks up and the turbo kicks in right through the rest of the rev range.

When releasing the throttle and coasting or dipping the clutch, i can hear grinding noises, its really noticeable, but only if you have just been over 3000 revs. Does this sound like the turbo? Im doubting it being the gearbox as its just all been done :( I havent been been thrashing it, im not used to it yet and dont trust the power just yet *tongue*

Hope this aint another daft question, and the noise is a flat tyre or something  *laughing* *laughing* *laughing*

Couldnt say about the grinding noise but i no someone who had problems with the anti run on valve it made the car pop and bang as soon as you got over 3500 rpm this is where the boost is increased as soon as that was changed the car ran sweet again. dont no if that could be part of the problem, i have blocked mine off.

put a set of mole-grips on the pipe and go for a spin...
Also check and check again (ie VERY DETAILLED INSPECTION) of the rubber balance pipe that loops from the side to front of the carb. If this is split, something similar can happen.

ok, followed all that through thanks, everythings perfect, its all mint and clean. As for the anti-run on valve ive been everywhere today trying to get one, only ones i could get are the larger ones with no run off pipe. Got one anyway im going to give that a try.

Im going to put a wanted ad up for a later MG metro smaller style one.

No luck, still does it. I replaced the air filter pipe, and checked that the arm to the wastegate down the right hand side (think thats what it is?) moves, and it does really freely. Sounds like an exhaust gasket has started to blow, so i am going to take the manifolds off this sunday and work out what goes where!

It feels as if the turbo just doesnt work, you can here it whisteling like when it spools and warms up, but nothing kicks in, theres no turbo. If you keep it revving aboe 5k, it dies! completely, and until the revs die down, it just sounds like air rushing arround, theres no pull of the engine at all. Its still juddering like hell as you accelerate past the 3k mark, or go up a really steep hill in any gear!

Any ideas of what it could be? If its a hose or something, i can buy it in town tomorow ready to fit on sunday thats all, or is there anything else other than gaskets that will need replacing after taking it ofF?

thankyou very much

james
