Has anyone experienced any problems with a standard gasket on a 998 turbo?

I'm about to bolt my 12g295 head on and am planning on using the standard gasket.

I considered the 1275 gasket, but there is one waterway hole missing.

Don't put a 1275 gasket on when using a small bore head. You'll just fill your cylinders with water.

The water holes in the head overlap the fire rings on no.1 and no.4 cylinders. I know this, because like a dick I grabbed the wrong head gasket when putting my N/A 998 back together.

All you can do is try a decent copper one and see what happens.

Thanks Wil.

I can only find the standard payen type copper/steel composite gasket. I'll try that and report back, unless someone can recommend a copper one.

I've been thinking a bit further ahead to running higher boost and the option of 11 studs on a small bore. Is there a 11 stud gasket available? I know the 1275 gaskets all seem to have the extra holes, but I've never seen a small bore one with 11 holes.

I don't know of any small bore head gaskets with 11 stud holes. But they would be easy to modify.

The other option is to block up the holes in the head so you could fit a large bore gasket.

Has anyone got any part numbers for the "best" 998T gasket?

You can try TAM2121 which is the latest Rover item. I'm using this but engine has not ran yet.

Moss now do an uprated gasket MST207, but I've not seen one.

Also Minisport do a GEG302, but again not seen one.

A 998 gasket on a 1275 head? Great idea, NOT!

Its ni on impossable to 11 stud a small bore head as the casting is shorter and there is no piller inside for the hole to go through also at the termostat end there is no room as the stat is closer to the rocker cover

I just bought one of these to hold in readiness for the 998T gasket going.

It's made by ACL in Australia, part no AP250MT.

ACL are in administration, so get your order in before stock runs out.

I spoke to rich at MS the other week and he said they were not currently available, so I've had to use a copper one.

Did yours come from MS?

Yes, got it from Minispares last week.

Exactly as Vegard's link above.

Just need to build a new engine to use it!

I used this AP250MT on 998 and g295. So far at 1bar it stands, but let's see a longer period and on the track.
Seriously racing guys told me they've been using this kind of composite gaskets for years with no problems. On 1300 reving 8-9k.

I thought that I should update this thread with my experience of the 'new kid in town gasket'

Basically I have now had two failures of the new gasket, one after a few thousand miles, one after a few hundred, so the first failure:

After lunching a copper gasket when I had boost control issues and lots of det I put one of the black ones on, this was just before Le Mans. I was running around 8psi, no pinking, no overheating, a nice relatively unstressd life for a head gasket. It then failed catastrophically. You can see the photo below.

Now, it has to be mentioned that I had torqued the head to 68Nm (as standard) but the gasket packet specified staged torquing 20Nm, 40Nm then 54Nm.

The following photo shows another firering with damage and likely to fail soon:

I therefore put this failure down to me over-torquing the gasket.

So, on to the second failure. This time I torqued to 54Nm in stages as specified. The gasket failed, with a leak from cylinder to coolant, see photo:

Now, having experience of this type of failure I know it's owing to under-torquing. I calibrated my wrench last month by the way, but it's unlikey to be high at 68Nm and low at 54Nm in any case.

I'm not suggesting that this gasket is a pile of junk, just it may not be suitable for the extra heat and pressure of a turbo engine.

My advice is that the Copper type (that are half the price) are more than up to the job and I wouldn't suggest using the Black type.

I'd be interested in others experience. It is worth noting that these gaskets are not in any way the same as the BK450 in material or construction and that the fire rings on the copper gaskets are actually thicker.

I hope this is of use to some.

I must have the same as you wil.
So far it stands after many sessions of mapping with 25-35C outside temperature and 2000 km. I'm going to the track soon, we'll see. For sure we'll go in two cars and will bring a towing bar.
