whats a det can? The ones that i expeienced were just piped 'tuned' ear defenders/muffs, whatever you want to call them That said - If you wear ANY ear defenders - even £1.99 wilko specials, you'll hear detonation long before you can without them. Basically, as the Db increases, your sensitivity to noise lower in the Db reange reduces - and in an enclosed RR dyno room, with an A-series at full chat - you've little chance of hearing detonation untill it's already doing damage... Wearing any ear defenders basically moves the whole sound 'curve' downwards (making everything quieter) and hence increasing the sensitivity of the ear. You can therefore pick out Detonation WELL before you normally could. If you can find them, these so-called 'det cans' are expensive. I was buggered if i could tell any significant difference between detonation with the expensive 'det cans' or cheapy ear-defenders tbh - and certainly not for the price difference...
