Right, while i an doing a major overhaul of the body (here ) I have been considering fitting a bulkead box just in the event that i may fit a carb turbo at some point in the distand future. The thing that has realy been putting me off is the amount of butchering required and the main reason ( some may think silly) the heater assembly sticks further out.*frown*

So, I need some help people,*blush* on deciding whether to or not. Pictures of how much the heater sticks out when refitted (and i dont want to know that its easier to leave it out, I want heat in the winter).*wink*

TBH i was not going to do this till recently as i had always thought about either making my own manifolds Mirrage styl'ee for the IHI turbo's i have or the Mirrage manifolds them selves:cool:

Please help, i'm confused and undecided.*oh well*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Did not check the link, but I think you can get away without putting in a box even using a standard metro turbo exhaust manifold. I put in a box, but I also drilled the motor mounting holes in the subframe about 1" further forward. Of course, I had to move the shift linkage an equal distance forward, and I had to lengthen the dogbone engine steady, but looking back at the firewall, I don't think I needed to put the box in!

I did this to a clubman front end, though, so it might prove a little too tight in a round nose. Also, you may need to fit a remote oil filter head as the front subframe cross member prohibits the filter from dropping down far enough.

I think drilling the mounts further forward (check for driveshaft clearance), moving the shift linkage forward, and finally tilting the top of the motor forward a few degrees would surely work without the need to put in a box.

I wouldn't bother, it's a lot of work for nothing if you're not fitting a turbo.

I would not bother either. Once you have the K1100 working, do you think you will ever go back to a 5 porter?

Moving the engine forward an inch really will not give the clearance required when using a standard metro turbo setup.

With a bulkhead box properly fitted there is no reason to move the engine mounts at all. It is very tight at the front in a round nose mini anyway.

Whats the loadings like on the CV joints when a movement forward like this involved?

The only way round it is to use a mirage or custom setup.

IMO I really wouldnt bother - the heater will never fit right afterwards (been there done that) And now I'm a big fan of the mirage setup on my new shell.

And i especially wounldt bother with your 16v plans that may end up in this shell

Just so people know the 92 on sub frames already have the engine moved aboit 1/2 inch further forward from the factory and space is alreadt limited at the front

I am think of leaving it, thanks for the help. Still, would like to see a picture of the heater fitted with a box fitted.

Thanks

I didnt really have a problem with the heater, just moved one bracket a little and with a few zip ties the heater looks nearly factory fitted, hope this helps.
